Finding Calm in Forest Bathing

It's been a time of fear, anger and turbulence.

Back in Maryland, my grandsons have been at home with my son, Keola and daughter-in-law, Sarah, unable to see friends or go out into public places. Keola and Sarah are luckily able to work from home. They take turns working, Sarah in the morning, Keola in the afternoon.

We love it that Sarah posts photos often for us to see. Every photo makes us smile.

Recently, Sarah has been taking the boys to the forest to play and explore (and maybe keep them out of daddy's hair).

With all the stress that we've been experiencing in recent days, just seeing this photo suddenly pop up on my screen gave me a feeling of calm, of peace.

I see my grandsons, tiny... on the trail, surrounded and embraced by the beauty of nature.

I've read that the Japanese practice shinrin yoku (forest bathing). It's supposed to be good for your physical and mental health.

I've always loved walking in woods and forests. I can well  believe how it would be good for your mental well being. After all, just looking at this photo made me smile and lift my spirits.

  2. Oh, my, amazing. I got lost in that photo and I can't even be sure how long I just sat staring at it. The scene really pulled me in. And a swear I could actually feel the joyful energy of your grandsons!

  3. Never heard of forest bathing, but I love it. It's a wonderful photo, makes me miss where I grew up, we had a large woods behind our farmhouse where us kids explored & even camped in the summers. This was very nice.

  5. I've really learned to embrace forest bathing. Hubby does a good walkie, twice a day on our 16 acres.
Our kids take turns with their kids. One parent supervises in the a.m., the other in the p.m. They both do a lot of work by computer.

  6. Need to enlarge and frame that photo. A serene scene. Glad an area near them seems like it's so far away from the city.
I loved walking some trails in Portland, Oregon with my old band director. With moss growing on the tree trunks, and waterfalls nearby, it felt like I'd walked into Hobbitland.
Oops, I'm still stuck in Kansas, Linda

  7. What a neat term. However, our forests are extremely buggy at the moment.

  9. Our backyard has two large trees that provide a canopy over the yard. I love to sit out there and just stare up into the tree branches. It IS soothing.

  10. You know I love forest bathing and do it often. I don't have such wonderful children to gaze at, though. I have to borrow them from passersby. :-)

  16. That is a great photo. I like forest bathing also, and it has been too long since I've had the opportunity. We do have a wooded area in our little park that the path goes through, and sitting on our garden deck we are almost lost in trees and greenery. That helps.

  18. I used to love watching my girls and friends and cousins on hikes and think, Yes! Blowing off the stink! A lot of energy was expended. Your photo could be framed and hung on my wall for reminiscing.
