We did get most things done on Wednesday. However we managed to injure ourselves in the process!
Mom? No. She's totally fine. She was feeling ill last Sunday, but she's much better now after I filled her with turkey soup and she got more rest. By Tuesday, she was raring to go, but we told her to take another day of rest just in case and she was able to make her macaroni salad with our help.
On New Year's Eve, she needed to make her complicated, labor intensive nishime but this year it required Art and me both to act as sous chefs, cleaning dishes and preparing lotus roots, carrots, araimo (dasheen/taro root), etc. for her.
We were happy to do this with her although Art and I both managed to injure ourselves the day before.
Yup. We did.
While hanging the laundry, Art managed to step on a rusty roofing nail. It must have been lying in wait for the last 14 years! We squeezed the blood out, cleaned it with alcohol and put a band-aid on it. It's a good thing he did get his tetanus shot last year.
That evening, I cut mom's hair and then while cutting my own hair managed to actually snip my left index finger very deep. I hate it when you don't even feel the cut and have look to see if it's going to bleed. And then it bleeds and won't stop.I put a band-aid on it and cut Art's hair. I thought it would be OK, but when I took the band-aid off the following morning, it promptly started to bleed again.
It's so annoying.
2020 has been a rather annoying year, full of changes, aggravation, sadness, isolation, despair tempered by moments of jubilation, humor, friendship and resolve.
And tonight... I imagine there will be fireworks right outside our bedroom window.
It's the way the old year passes
ReplyDeleteFa la la la la ...
It's a good thing Art had had his shot. When I was eight years old, I jumped off my grandmother's porch onto the rake that was laying there. It ran completely through my foot. They took me to the doctor for that shot and I had to soak that foot in hot epson salts water morning and evening until it finally healed.
ReplyDeleteOuch! I hope neither of those wounds become infected. What a way to start the new year. Take care.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! Sorry that you and Art injured yourselves. I am terrible at cutting hair, I can never get both sides even. I trim my bangs, in very small increments, and they usually end up ok, but I can't cut the rest of my hair. I won't go to a salon as long as Covid is around, so if this virus doesn't go away, I am going to have some really long hair, until I get both vaccinations. It's past my shoulders now by about 3 inches. It is still pretty even at the bottom though. My last professional hair cut was back in early March of 2020. My husband bought some clippers and does his own hair. Before he bought the clippers, his hair had gotten so thick in the back, on top, and down on his neck that it was making him too hot. He did a good job with the clippers on his hair. I can't even imagine how much damage I could do to hair with clippers, especially right now, with a serious vision problem in one eye. I even have to get at a good angle to see to pour into a cup without missing the cup. It is a macular hole in my eye that I will be getting surgery to repair it as soon as it can be scheduled. I don't like having to be around people by going to the retina surgeon's office, or to go the outpatient surgery, but there is no choice. I am just hoping they follow all of the covid safety rules carefully.
ReplyDeleteOur daughter gave birth to our beautiful little grand daughter on the eve of New Years Eve. Our daughter emailed us her baby picture, next to a picture of our newborn grand daughter and they almost look like twins! Daughter, son in law, and baby will go home from the hospital today, and our 10 year old grandson will finally get to meet his baby sister. A wonderful start to 2021!
This year MUST be better. We are all willing it. Take care, I injure myself too much in my old age.
ReplyDeleteKay you had me smiling, cringing & chuckling all in one blog! I'm glad to read your mom is okay but oh those cuts on you & Art! And those pics of fireworks right outside your windows, haha my gosh!! I sure have enjoyed reading Kay's Adventures aka Musings, hope you and your awesome family have a very Happy Hawaiian New Year :^)
ReplyDeleteHopefully you got all the wounds out of your system so you can face a clean and healthy 2021. Hope they all heal nicely.
ReplyDeleteHow neat to have fireworks so close and you had the best and safest seat.
Happy New Year to the three of you and here's to a safe, no injuries 2021!!!
ReplyDeleteWow. You are troopers.
ReplyDeleteThere is something about cooking together, isn't there? It's difficult, for your mom, when she used to be doing so much for others. I know my hubby has lost a lot of independence with age.
Happy 2021!
Goodness me, you and your hubby don't have to be JUST alike, do you? :-)
ReplyDeleteSorry for your injuries but hopefully, all is healing now.
Your MOM! She just looks great, please give her my love!!
We had to put up with loud fireworks also and even had gunshots at 2AM!!
Happy New Year!!
Sounds like you ended the year being very industrious, if a bit worse for wear. You will mend. Hopefully, the new year will mend all of us. The fireworks in our neighborhood were very minor, none of the house-rattling booms that often occur. The cats, however, were terrified, and all of them came to our bedroom/bathroom and stayed close by all night. That was a first.
ReplyDeleteThose fireworks are WAY too close. So glad you are all okay after your adventures. So, wasn't Art wearing slippahs at least? Maybe you need gardening gloves on to cut hair.... The 3-4" of Kansas City snow we have with big, fat flakes could clear out your fireworks smoke. More snow coming! It's a new year! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Art WAS wearing his slippers. The nail went right through it. Quite a shock, it was.
DeleteOh gosh I am so sorry to hear all that. Glad that your Mom started to feel better, but rusty nail and snipped index finger? Ouch! I am cutting Gregg's hair now and managed to poke his ear but did not do too much damage. I peeled the tip of my nail off and a bit of my finger while peeling the spuds the next day! So, misery loves company, know how you feel and Gregg is making sure I am wide awake the next time I cut his hair. Wishing you all a Very Happy and Very Healthy New Year!
ReplyDeleteSounds as though you're as accident-prone as I am! I'm glad mamma is OK.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Kay!! Wish I had your help making my nishime!! Haha!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is just so adorable!!
Hi Pat! Happy New Year to you and your family too! Wasn't the fireworks crazy last night? Good thing we had trade winds to clear off the smoke. I got only 5 hours sleep last night. I'm still hoping we can all be together again in 2021 for Zumba.
DeleteMy kids were over and my son in law had quite an arsenal to contribute to the display. My street is known for being a war zone.
DeleteI really miss class and all of you wonderful ladies. However, it sure doesn’t look promising. Maybe something magical will happen and someone will offer a class sometime this year. 😘
I’m really, really hoping that will happen because as I recall, Stephanie is leaving, isn’t she? Fingers crossed because it wouldn’t be the same without us all being together again.

DeleteOuch! It sounds like a mix of good and bad, just like our year. Hope your finger and Art's foot are OK.
ReplyDeleteSo very glad that your mom was able to make all her usuals. Not glad at all about the finger snip tho. Very not glad about the nail in the foot. Sounds like you handled it right. So pleased he had a recent tetnus shot.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about these injuries, we all have to take care.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!!! I was a bit worried about your "wounded" status but felt relief that it wasn't a gnormous wound and you will heal very soon. If it still bleeds, put some cayenne powder on it. That stops bleeding in a heart beat.
ReplyDeleteI bet the nishime was wonderful!
The nishime was as wonderful as ever. I could almost see the fireworks down in town. Kapolei and Waipahu looked crazy and my tai chi friends said all their neighbors must be spending their rent money on fireworks this year. I shall have to tell Alexa to put cayenne powder on my shopping list. My finger finally stopped bleeding.
DeleteHappy New Year Kay! I'm sorry you and Art had wounds on NYE! It is great that your Mom still made the nishime! She is amazing! I had a quiet evening at home by myself. I had a nice relaxing evening!
ReplyDeleteNot a good way to start 2021. All the best for a rapid recovery and happy new year.
ReplyDeleteSorry to read about your injuries, hope they soon heal.
ReplyDeleteSending my good wishes to you and yours for a Happy New Year.
All the best Jan
And happy new year to the three of you. I'm still thinking of macaroni salad.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you all! Glad to know your mom is okay now. She is a trooper - just like my 97-year-old mom-in-law who lives with us. And a very nice display of fireworks.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your & Art’s injuries. In India, we always apply turmeric powder for any wounds. It is a great antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and stops bleeding immediately. Just apply generously on the bleeding wound and it will stop the bleeding immediately. And it is always available in our kitchens.
Hello Asha, Happy New Year to you too and your family. 97! That's wonderful! Thank you so much for your kind comment.
DeleteNo kidding? Turmeric? I had no idea. Honolulu Auntie recommended cayenne powder. Now I shall get both of these spices so I'll be ready for the next injury.
Well, you certainly ended the old year on not the best of notes with all the injuries, but glad they weren't more serious as you insure no infection. You are ready now for a much better new year than our previous one turned out to be. Wishing all of you peace, prosperity, good health and happiness!
ReplyDeleteI use clippers to cut my husband's hair, and I enjoy it. There are guards to make sure I don't get carried away. And I am so glad to hear that both you and Art are recovering from your wounds. Thank you for your informative and delightful posts during the past and am looking forward to 2021! Good riddance to the last year. I am hopeful that we will be able to get together again by summer or fall. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family! Home hair cutting is a new activity here in our house too, although I haven’t cut myself. Yet! Paul likes my haircuts so well he thinks he will not be going back to the barber shop. I think differently!
ReplyDeleteYou changed your header photo! Please tell us more about it. Is it one of the irrigation ditches to water the fields? Built by CCC? Why the ladder going into the trench? To clear out the openings? Did you play in them? Is it still there? (I floated one of the ditches with Kauai Adventures last trip. It was all greenery lined. Amazing construction and history.) Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI just sent a text to my brother who has even more memories and knowledge than I do. It's amazing how much more he remembers because he's 3 years younger than I am and we moved away from that Kunia home when I was about 6 years old.
DeleteI've had a nail run clear through my foot twice in my lifetime. Neither were a pleasant experience until things scabbed over and toughened up again.
ReplyDeleteThrough your foot?!?! Aaaaackkkk!!!!
Deleteeach year, stage of life, etc has its challenges that's how we grow...lol! unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful firework and view from the window to soothe any pain and injury in 2020.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Ms Kay!
