We've always liked charging our cellphones overnight at our charging station. It's just a nice feeling to be 100% charged in the morning.
With a 100% charge I can go the whole day without worrying.
So you can imagine how dismayed I was to see this on Yahoo News.
I found more information on the PC website:
Here are some important points from the website:
"If you leave the smartphone plugged in overnight, it is going to use a bit of energy constantly trickling new juice to the battery every time it falls to 99%. That is eating into your phone's lifespan."
They all say not to put your phone under your pillow at night. The heat build up is very bad for your phone.
Having your phone where it's too hot (car dashboard in the hot Hawaiian sun) or freezing is bad.
"Running a smartphone until it's dead—a full discharge—every time is not the way to go with modern lithium-ion batteries. Don't even let it get that close to 0%. That wears out a lithium-ion battery even faster than normal. Partial discharge is the way to go."
"Plug the phone in before it asks you to enter a low-power mode; iOS will ask you to turn that on when you hit 20% power. Plug it in when the phone is between 30-40%. Phones will get to 80% quickly if you're doing a fast charge. Pull the plug at 80-90%, as going to full 100% when using a high-voltage charger can put some strain on the battery. Keep the phone battery charge between 30-80% to increase its lifespan."
OK... It's a bit more inconvenient, but I'll have to change my iPhone charging habits from now on.
Darn! 😕
The comment above is going to be deleted. Not only is it all lies but it is full of profanity. Kay will delete it.
ReplyDeleteI have heard this about batteries but I guess I just don't have the will to change yet another bad habit.
ReplyDeleteAntonymous has posted that offensive post again. Kay needs to remove both of them.
ReplyDeleteI actually got a note on my iphone wrt overnight charging. They kept it at 80% until close to the time when I might normally begin using it.
ReplyDeleteRest assured Kay, Apple has you covered and as long as you have optimized charging selected in your battery settings, it won't over charge. Here is an excerpt from Apple's website:
ReplyDeleteWith iOS 13 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimized Battery Charging activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged.
P.S. I got the boomer comment word for word on my last post and had to delete it. Fortunately it doesn't happen to often but I don't know what whomever is trying to accomplish by posting that over and over.
I almost said "I'm not going to read this, it doesn't apply to me" BUT I do have a 10" tablet and often wonder if it's smart to keep charging it back to 100% after every use (or sleep with it). Recently I've noticed it only charges up to 99% now. Good info here, Kay!
ReplyDeleteI have had my phone over a year and only charged it once when it warned me recently. Yep, a flip phone and prepaid, mainly because I have no cell service here and only use mine for emergencies, grocery or prescription pickups. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteOur smart phones really are smart, and I've found all Apple products to be likewise. They get to know us and how we operate and adjust accordingly. Our new iPhones have the higher capacity charger so our phones charge super fast now. The only time I leave my phone charging overnight is when we travel, but, of course, that's not a concern right now.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to unplug as soon as it gets to 100% but often leave it overnight to charge tut tut.
ReplyDeleteI see that anonymous coward has resurfaced. Pity.
ReplyDeleteMy phone charges up quickly, so I give it a charge in the evening, and another one in the morning.
I have your habit too and need to change it. I thought the batteries were smart enough to turn off the charging at 100% though. This is WAY too complicated! :(
ReplyDeleteIt's a habit I have too. I'm not going to bother changing because it's the best time for me. Also charge the iPad then. My lap top I keep plugged in all the time unless I have to move it. It will be fine.
ReplyDeleteI have been charging my iPhone on my docking station on my bedside clock radio for years. I haven't noticed a weaker battery. Is it OK if I just keep doing what I'm doing? I don't especially like change :-) :-(
ReplyDeleteI knew this but I still do it
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I try to keep my phone and computers far away from me when I sleep. Some experts say that the EMFs can be harmful so having them in our pockets, next to our ears, etc. is dangerous for our health. To be safe, I pay attention to that. I wish I weren't so dependent on all these modern devices, but I am.
ReplyDeleteI keep my settings on optimized charging, so that when I charge it (every other day, usually), it stays near 80% until around 3:00am. It "knows" I will be getting up around 5:00am. :-)
ReplyDeletewell it's hard to know these days what is true..to mask or not to mask, to charge overnight or not...CONFUSING!
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThat is quite the infringement on life, expecting us to keep an eye on the phone's battery level, then plug is in and check back for the charging status. Mine can just continue to be plugged in over night to be at full charge in the morning.
It helps to read a lot and do your research. I don't use my phone all that much.
ReplyDeleteWe have been talking about this very same thing ten minutes ago. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteI just charge mine when it gets to about 30% is this right or wrong, I'm not sure but it's what I do!
ReplyDeleteTake care
All the best Jan
Thanks Kay!
ReplyDeleteI heard about it, and it happened to my old phone. Now, I always bring the charger, so I can charge anytime and not too long :)
