Thanksgiving 2021

We dithered over what to do for Thanksgiving this year. However, once again it was just the three of us. We have young family members who are not vaccinated as well as family who have to go out into the world to work. I'm hoping this is the last holiday that we have to exercise so much caution.

So then... do we get a turkey? Do we go through the bother of brining and roasting the turkey, making stuffing and baking that pumpkin pie?

There was the option of just buying everything done for you at Zippy's. But we don't really eat mashed potatoes. We like our own stuffing. We don't eat rolls. And Art does like to bake his own pumpkin pie. And that looked like way too much food for just the three of us.

I considered just grilling some teriyaki chicken.

But in the end....

Yup. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, macaroni salad, pumpkin pie and a lot of yummy selections a good friend kindly shared with us. And yup, there was too much food, BUT we froze a whole lot of it to have next month so it's all good.

And you know what? We are not spring turkeys chickens anymore. All this cooking totally wore us out. (Then again, we don't have to cook for a couple of days so it was worth it.)

I hope you all had a happy day as well.

  1. Cooking is hard on us because we both have back issues. Sue also does stuffing outside of the bird, especially when we get one that come pre-stuffed. We like stuffing so much that she does it anyway.

  2. Sounds like you did it up just right. Somehow the left over days are never a chore and sometimes, the best part. .

  3. We had a quiet pre-ordered dinner, and it was so lovely that we may do it again. And we have leftovers for days! Happy Thanksgiving to all three of you! :-)

  4. Totally worn out from cooking but we too have lots of leftovers from a 16 lb turkey...our expected company didn't arrive so hopefully we can save some of this for Christmas holidays...I slept all afternoon, had some pumpkin pie and then was ready for bed...lol!

  7. That looks delicious! My mom isn't doing very well, so we had a very scaled down Thanksgiving with the traditional foods. I bought a pumpkin pie from a friend who specializes in pie making for this holiday. I love stuffing too!!

  8. Nice looking meal. Yes, ours looked like that too. I had a small second on the pie and whipped cream tho.

  9. We had the same dilemma. Our kids are too far away to visit; and we opted not to go to the in-laws where one or more would be unvaccinated. We got take-out. It was easy, and the only thing we missed was the smell of the turkey cooking in the oven all day. Bonus: no dishes! Have a happy holiday!

  12. What a great feast, and from a good friend! We usually get our turkey meal from Lanakila Kitchen - best deal in town and the best turkey, too - but this year they did not have it. So, I ordered the whole turkey fixings from Zippy's but it had to be heated up, and I made sides such as sweet potato with marshmallow topping, mochi rice stuffing, 2 pumpkin pies (that were disasters because I substituted too many things instead of following the recipe, and misoyaki butterfish. The kitchen was a mess, and as usual there was way too much food with my brother's and sister's family bringing more desserts, noodles, mac and cheese, shrimp, poke and pupus.

On top of all that, I had a sinus infection (I got my eyeliner tattoed on a few days prior) and wore a mask and kept washing and washing my hands. All in all, it was an exhausting but good lunch and great company. The house is cleaned up so maybe I am ready for Christmas, when my son comes back for a visit from California.

    1. Wow! That IS a lot of work, especially the miso yak butterfish. I’m so glad you had such a fabulous Thanksgiving with family. We’re hoping to get together for New Years, unless the numbers jump up again. My friend has her eyeliner and eyebrows tattooed on too and I’m always envious. I’m so chicken.

  13. Yep, had there been just three of us, we would have cooked a turkey dinner too. As it turned out, we got to feed seven of us. Yes, that was a lot of cooking, but we were so glad to be able to bring happiness to the others around our table that it was worth it.

    1. I think you’re looking at the layered Jello desserts that our friend gave us along with spinach rolls and some somen sushi.

  15. Your cooking looks delicious Kay. Last year we bought a lot of dishes but truthfully we enjoyed our own more. This year we made everything ourselves. We did buy an already brined Turkey breast as our number was very small. (We are also being super cautious.) It was so good! We will be buying one again next year. A belated Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

  16. Sounds good to me! I always liked having leftovers, that compensated for the exhaustion associated with preparing the meal. Know you had a happy Thanksgiving.

  17. We ended up going sort of non-traditional this year since there were only four of us. We cooked smaller dishes and tried different recipes for everything. For example, we just cooked a turkey breast instead of the entire bird and did a dry rub on it which we had never done before.

  18. The pre-made food was not as good as in the past. I think that is not the place to order from. But we had a very special Thanksgiving, so not complaining.

  19. Tradition, tradition! Remember that song from Fiddler on the Roof? Your feast looks delicious and I hope you are enjoying the leftovers as well.
I had the most unconventional dinner ever. Visiting my mom in Florida in a rehab center, the only thing open to bring her for dinner Thursday was from a small Cuban takeout place. So we sat down to black beans, Cuban rice, yukka, plantains, and pork! Just so happy to be together.

  20. I went with my son-in-law and daughter to Tennessee to my younger son, Scott's, and his wife Ginger and met with almost all the family for Thanksgiving. Ginger and the other woman, including Keith's Esther and my daughter, Leslie, did most of the work. I helped clean up but did no actual cooking or even preparation. We had a very good Thankdgivin!g dinner and a great visit
