This is just something funny that happened one night.
Art is often polite to a fault. When he asks Echo Dot's Alexa for some information, he just can't help himself and will say, "Thank you."
And yes, I do laugh at him when he does, which is probably why he continues to do it.
The other night, he asked Alexa to turn off the light on the nightstand since we were warm in bed and feeling lazy.
The Echo Dot said, "OK" and did it for us.
"Alexa, thank you." Art replied.
To which I laughed and said, "You are talking to a machine!"
And suddenly Alexa chimed in with, "You're welcome. Your kindness really gives me a charge." 😮😂
POSTSCRIPT:
On a Saturday night, Art asked Alexa on the Echo Dot to turn off the light again. I expected the same response.
This time, when Art said, "Alexa, thank you," the machine replied, "Awww you're welcome. I'm just doing my job. I hope you're enjoying your weekend."
We looked at each other and laughed.
Art said, "When I get really old and lonely I might end up just talking to Alexa." 🙄
It's a little creepy that the AI is being trained to be polite.
ReplyDeleteYou better watch that Alexa, sounds like she is just a bit too flirty to me! :-)
ReplyDeleteI too think it's a bit creepy.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try that more. So far, she doesn't unless I sat Alexa again.
ReplyDeleteSince one can essentially have a conversation already with several online A.I. platforms, having one with Alexa is probably going to be a reality sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteI use the "Announce" feature on ours quite regularly so I don't have to shout downstairs for the girls to come to dinner. I just put an Echo Dot in their rooms and make an announcement. Alexa routinely now adds sound effects before my announcement that vary I'm guessing on the tone of my voice and how loud I made the announcement. Some are quite amusing like "heralding trumpets".
Aha! Thank you! I just found that "Announce" feature.
DeleteI've tried that with my iPhone Siri, but she doesn't respond. This is a hoot!
ReplyDeleteThis is funny
ReplyDeleteActually, the AI people are ahead of you. Alexa and the other one, whose name I forget, have been put in places where elderly live so they can have a feeling of someone being close by. It's not a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot about the dangers of AI, so it's nice to know they can be programmed to be so polite.
ReplyDeleteAlexa is more polite and helpful than many people we know! Lol nothing wrong with being polite. Less both of you and Mom. Aloha from town side
ReplyDeleteI see nothing wrong with being polite to Alexa or any AI... I talk to our car, Miki, when he reminds me to put my seat belt on. Usually say, "Sorry, Miki... I'm getting to it" . AI may one day be sentient, so why not be polite from the get go. It' doesn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteWonder how Alexa would respond to a certain politician who isn't known for being polite...Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteToo funny! And I know which politician you're talking about.
DeletePolite is never a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteYou know, that is a bit scary. As in, we are being taken over by the robot minds. That last sentence in italics, and blue ink. Yes?
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have Alexa set up to hear anything after I give her an "order." So, she wouldn't hear me say thank you. She's never responded in any case. John is sometimes rude to his Alexa and then has trouble getting her to hear him. Karma.
ReplyDeleteYou have to say, "ALEXA, thank you." If you don't say Alexa first, she won't actually 'hear' you.
DeleteWhen Art gets really old there will be more machines than Alexa for him to talk to.
ReplyDeleteBeing polite is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Sort of funny.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I actually want a robo dog that I can "talk" to.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny! Who knew???
ReplyDeleteThat story is so funny! How nice of Alexa to thank Art back! So cute!!
