More Endless Phishing...

Good grief! 😱

More stuff to worry about. Sheesh! I got this message a week ago. What the heck!

$457.00???

Did I click on something without meaning to and buying whatever this is? What is Life Lock? But that first sentence isn't quite grammatically correct, is it? And they spelled remittance with one t.

So I look online and saw this:

You really do have to be more careful these days.

There are so many phishing emails coming through that my computer isn't able to block.

This is what phishing means:

Phishing is a cyber attack that involves fake communications to trick people into giving away personal information or money. The goal is to steal money, gain access to sensitive data, or install malware on the victim's device.

I texted my techie son-in-law and asked him about it and he said to check the address where it came from. Hmmm... shirley brian? And something to download? OK. Definitely phishing.

And then there are those phone calls telling you something is wrong with your computer and instructing you to do something to "fix it."

Be careful everybody. Technology can be scary and there are bad people out there using it.

  1. I get the Lifelock scam too and lately, many PayPal ones. Since I don't use PayPal, I can ignore them easily!

  2. Fortunately, the spam blocker on gmail does a pretty good job and I rarely get those things. Perhaps only once a month or so. But the ones I do get are getting more sophisticated all the time which doesn't sit well with me as I age and slowly lose brain cells.

  3. You cannot post these reminders often enough. I received a IM that warned me that I have an unpaid toll that must be settled immediately. Number one, we pay our tolls as we go. Number two, how would they connect our car with my facebook account? Number three, I had not been anywhere near Florida for years. They wanted me to click on a link, which of course I did not do. I deleted it, and have received a flurry of them since, all purporting to be from a different state.

But despite all that, I cannot believe how many people are taken in by this stuff.

  4. A couple of years ago, I fell for a scam after a good friend's email was hacked. I ended up losing $400 but learned my lesson! Hubby doesn't want me EVER to click on links from an email. He keeps me safe. Thanks for the post, Kay!

  5. I get those heart stoppers a lot. The first clue is always the email. But it isn't the whole story. I hate these scammers.

  6. If only the spammers could use their technology for doing positive things just think how good the word could be.

  7. I have Xfinity for my internet, it's monthly bill is an automatic deduction. Scammers send me emails that say my payment didn't go through. It looks exactly like the real Xfinity company's emails except for the sender's field. I took one into the store and they confirmed it's a scam. I dropped AT&T 7 years ago, and I still get scams that say they will cancel if I don't pay my bill. Most anything that's scammers seems to go to my junk file and has really weird spellings in their sender fields. I just delete. It's a bummer. I've even gotten to where I barely trust known sites. 1. I get messages from Netflix, Amazon Prime, insurance, phone carriers, the gift cards that require my banking information, over and over and over. I don't have any of those things. None.

    2. Dang! I just got an email from mom's day care with just an attachment about ASPCA. I wrote to them saying they need to say something instead of just sending an attachment because it makes me leery thinking it could be spam. She promised to do so in the future.

  8. Thanks for the reminder. I lost about $200 this way some time back. Wasn't being attentive. Grrr, slimeballs.

  10. Yes, scammers are getting smarter... possibly due to AI... but it just makes me delete almost everything except people I know and they don't generally need me to click on anything. I've gotten them from places we do business with and always call the place on the number I have (not the one given) to check. But the ones you get from places you don't do business with are easily fishing. And yes, my grandson also told me 'look at the address'. I've also noticed sometimes the printing is weird and/or the spelling is off. Yes, stay vigilant!

  11. Whether it's automatic payments that didn't go through or $400 charges for internet security of packages that can't be delivered, I get them all the time. I check the address - some of them are quite funny - know it's junk and delete it. It's annoying and disturbing, always demands a second look, but it's just something we apparently have to put up with and be aware of these days.

  12. Getting tired of reading about charges I didn't make. I generally just report and delete.

  14. Thanks for the heads up; this one is a new one on me, although similar phishes splash in with annoying regularity.

  15. I get these often. Delete, delete, delete. But I got a text message alleging to be from a bank I use telling me my account was frozen. I was 99 per cent sure it was spam and stopped in at the bank just to check. Yes, spam and it's coming at us in all directions. Thanks for the useful post.

    1. Hello Buttercup, it's so wonderful to meet you. Thank you for your comment and thank you for giving me the 'head's up' about bank mail too. Goodness! It's coming to us from all directions.

  16. Just around the end of the year the Federal government announced that it would be sending pandemic funds to those who did not receive them a few years ago. We received ours so knew there wouldn't be any coming our way.

In early February I received a TEXT saying that my funds were ready to be sent and they needed to verify my bank account. HA! How would the IRS have my text number? They would have all the other information like they did a few years ago and every year since when I do the taxes and would either mail or deposit the funds. I knew it was a ruse.

I did post the nonsense to Facebook as a warning. A dear friend who did NOT get the original funds got a check in the mail, just as it should be.

  17. Thanks for the heads up Kay. I get a lot of phishing emails and texts from people. I report and delete every one of them. These posts are good reminders that we just can't be too careful. And I no longer answer the phone to anyone I don't know. I get a lot of those too, many leaving voice mails. I was interested in your commenters' replies. They also provide a lot of interesting info.

  18. I had some things like that happen also. The scam said that I spent 560.00 on Tacos in Texas at a restaurant, was this true? Click on link to verify. I checked my pending charges on my card...nothing. Aside from that my credit card company calls me with anything out of line, they did last weekend on a purchase I did make.
We also don't answer the phone unless it is from someone we know.

I'm sorry to have to do this, but again... sigh... it's the spam that's driving me crazy.
