My friend, Myra introduced me to Vick's VapoCOOL cough drops recently. I was surprised at the burst of menthol when I tried it. The effect lasted about 15 minutes but felt effective.
Art tried it because he does cough quite often, but he wanted Sugarfree. We found some at Walmart and he agreed that it really was effective.
I wrote a post about this in January and Rian said she likes Luden's Cherry cough drops. DrumMajor said she likes Hall's Cherry cough drops. I couldn't find the cherry flavor but we got the menthol.
Art tried them all and said he preferred the VapoCOOL.
The consensus appears to be VapoCOOL.
(Ono is Hawaiian for good tasting.)
However, another friend who did not give me her chart back said she'd buy the Ludens for taste, but not to suppress any cough. She felt the VapoCOOL might make her cough more. However, she always buys Halls because that's the one that goes on sale. 😂
And then there's my brother, Dennis who couldn't make up his mind and had two 2s, but he likes their flavor. My sister-in-law followed my rules and said she only likes the VapoCOOL.
So there you have it. My unscientific poll is completed.
What? Mom? She used to buy bags and bags of Ricola cough drops and eat them like candy, cough or no cough. 😏
I don’t need cough drops or not very often. Sue uses zinc lozenges. They seem to work for her.
ReplyDeleteThe last several years I have been suffering sinus infections which cause me to cough, especially if I am somewhere it can be distracting to other. I buy whatever is on sale.
ReplyDeleteI too buy the Riccola, sugar free, to keep on hand for when I suddenly start coughing and can't stop while around other people. Don't know if it's the placebo effect or if they really have some medicinal effect, as long as the coughing stops.....

We don't have VapoCool over here that I've seen. Mostly it is Halls, store branded ones and occasionally Ludens. I mostly buy Halls and mostly cherry flavor though I do think the menthol flavor is more effective. I prefer though to treat the drainage that causes coughing rather than the cough itself so I generally use Dayquil during the day and Nyquil at night, both of which clear my sinuses well and prevent drainage in my throat. I just use the cough drops when out and about or when cold air might tickle the throat.

ReplyDeleteI got a kick out of your cough drop poll, being a bit of an addict myself. My favorite is Luden's sugar free cherry cough drops, but they're not always available and often cost more than other brands. I always like having some kind of cough drop available for when I get that tickle in my throat. I also love the brown Ricola drops with a bit of horehound in them, but I haven't seen them for sale anywhere for ages.
ReplyDeleteI have Ricola but remember the Ludens (?) cherry ones from the little boxes my parents used to have. I thought it was candy! I hope to never need cough drops but it's good to know that there are somewhat effective ones.

ReplyDeleteI bought the VapoCool after you wrote about it. It was okay. In fact I will have one now because I came down with a terrible coughing/congestion cold this weekend. My favorite was Luden's cherry drops because it tasted so good.
ReplyDeleteGreat poll, Kay! I can't use anything sugar free as I'm allergic to sugar alternatives. But I have a chronic cough that I 've had for 24 years... ever since I had radiation for BC. They call it my radiation cough, but it could be Gerds or some lung irritation. But Luden's wild cherry cough drops stop it almost immediately. I buy them by the bags and keep them everywhere. But I agree that if you have a cold or sore thought or congestion, Hall's methol ones work. DH uses them when needed.

We get Ludens and Halls here but I don't buy them. I have nasal drip from allergies. the best for me is an antihista
