When we visited our friend, Terry and her husband we noticed that they had put up a cute dog poop prevention sign on their front lawn.
She told me that they haven't had a problem since then with people walking their dogs and leaving poop on their lawn.
This all sounded like a fun idea so I bought one just like theirs and installed it on our front yard.
It seemed to work and we were happy.
My brother laughed when he saw it and said, "You know dogs can't read, right?"
Sigh... I guess the dogs in Terry's neighborhood are a lot smarter than ours.
POSTSCRIPT 1:
Noooooo! Would you believe a few day's later... 😣 more poop? This time it was a little father down on the sidewalk where we walk.
And no... I didn't throw the poop in our garbage bin. I left it out there on the sidewalk (in a plastic bag) for the owners to maybe get a hint.
I'll leave it there and throw it away on garbage day so it doesn't stink up our bin.
POSTSCRIPT 2:
OK...
We've had a lot of windy weather lately and it kept blowing the poop out of the pot and into the street which I kept picking up and putting back into the pot.
It was aggravating. But garbage day came. I tossed the poop away and hoped that would be the end of it.
Nope! More poop a week or so later!!! 😝
So I got a much bigger concrete planter pot and put the poop in it with a rock to hold it down just in case.
POSTSCRIPT 3:
NO, NO, NO!
Would you believe someone came and took the poop away WITH my planter pot?!? 😲
No more sublety.
Since the dogs can't read, we put up a sign for the owners.
Sigh.....
Frustrating. My daughter has a dog in the city and has no yard. She carries poop bags everywhere - buys them in a roll. When we lived in the city we had a very big fenced yard, so our dog was free to deposit where she chose. And she usually chose to go far from the house. Unless she was annoyed with me for some reason and then, and only then, I would find a deposit right on the step outside the back door. 'Protest movement' we called this.

It is awful, isn't it? We live beside a highway, and I've spotted the one person who walks their dog. I have actually thrown the poop in the ditch. You'd think they'd at least do that. sigh.
ReplyDeleteIt really has become a problem everywhere and part of the larger problem of people only being concerned about themselves and not how their actions impact those around them. More than once, I have been sitting on my front porch swing reading and someone will walk their dog by and allow it to poop in our yard. They will start to walk away and I will generally give a soft cough or make a noise of some sort which will catch their attention and more often than not, they will walk back and pick it up. But along the street, there is lots of poop in our lawn and I never would walk there barefoot so I know I only catch a small fraction of the violators. I live on a dead end street on the edge of town that doesn't see a lot of foot traffic. I can't imagine how bad it is in the higher trafficked parts of town.
ReplyDeleteThis is the problem with dogs. It’s hard to control when and where, but at least people could stoop and scoop. I must say that most folk here do pick up.
ReplyDeleteKay, your signs will change no one's behavior. If they are good pet parents, they pick up after their animal, but if not, you don't get to change their behavior. I see it as a part of living in a city. I have been out in the yard when neighbors walk their dogs and we stop and talk for awhile. These are the people who take care of their animals.
ReplyDeleteI used to find dog poop in my back yard when I was getting ready to mow. I don't own a dog. So, I had a gate put in my fence and now I don't have that issue. I don't understand WHY people think that others want to deal with their dog crap. When we had dogs, they were in a big fenced backyard and did their business there. I cleaned up after them or once in a while my husband did. He did such a terrible job that I took it over--perhaps that was his intention? ;)

ReplyDeleteHow rude of those dog owners to just let their dogs poop and not pick up. We're pretty lucky in our neighborhood. Maybe because we don't have sidewalks and people walk their dog on the street.
Well, that's a bit cheeky isn't it, taking the pot too. At least they took the poo, they could have left it behind. I see dog poo in bags left on the sidewalk, if you have the energy to pick up the poo, at least take it home!!!!!

Our neighbor is terrible about that. He is a person who sits on his porch criticizing and finding fault with everyone...but he walks his dog and doesn't clean up.
ReplyDeleteAs a long time dog owner I get upset too cuz us responsible owners are lumped into the bad. This is prevalent in every neighborhood. Even my small condo, we have one owner who had refused to pickup the poop. I saw him many times not picking it up, that is until a new manager came in and brought the hammer down on him. Now no more poop on our tiny shared lawn. They are horrible dog owners BTW. Their dog is such a sweetie though, not her fault she has irresponsible owners. BTW if you put a container with poop in it, they might start using that to discard the poop! The poop war rages on. BB

ReplyDeleteHope the sign for the owners works - really too bad to steal your planter, no one could feel OK about that? People here are pretty good about picking up poop, except for one family where a middle school aged child walks a very large barely under control dog. They clearly need a different approach but I'm not sure what.

DeleteDoes your city have a law? The Poop Fairy is YOU! Okay! I've seen a sign that says to pick up your poop, because there is no Poop Fairy, but there is. Total bummer about the offenders. Could add a sign that you have a camera and the Poop Fairy is watching. At least others aren't stepping in it, but on the sidewalk is stunning. Maybe they think that's avoiding the grassy area.... DeleteSorry, Kay, but I had to laugh when you said that they took the poop AND THE POT! Not funny for you (but kinda). However, you are right that some people just don't care about leaving a mess on someone's property. We had a problem once where a dog owner wasn't picking up, but we have a camera... and went on our neighborhood watch and said that 'you know who you are and we have pics'. It did stop. We also have a sign in our drive that says "Smile! You're on camera!"

DeleteMost dog owners are pretty considerate, at least that was my experience. However there are always those who don't think a thing of their dogs doing that somewhere else. A camera might be a fun way to 'see' who it is.
