Our friends, Dave and Diane proposed a trip on Hawaii's sort-of-new light rail system called the Skyline.
According to Wikipedia:
"The final cost has grown from preliminary projections of $4 billion in 2006 to as much as $12.4 billion by 2021."
I did see another early projection cost of $5.1 billion. Ahh well... what's a billion here and there? 😕 In 2025, it's still projected to be over $12 billion.
In 2025 the Star Advertiser called it:
"The world's priciest light-rail project per capita..."
Much of the problem now is that because the rail is so costly, it may not be able to go as far as proposed initially. They've also cut out most of the parking lots at the stations and uuummm... NO bathrooms. 😬
OK, going back to Dave and Diane. They suggested driving to Kapolei to the start of the Skyline and riding it to the end in Kalihi. Then we could ride it back to Kapolei and grab lunch there.
They've been on the rail once before. We've never been on the Skyline, so it would be an adventure. Our daughter laughed when I told her about it since we used the subway system while living in Chicago for 35 years and have also been on the Shinkansen bullet train many times in Japan.
But this is Hawaii!
We went to one of the few Park and Ride stations in Kapolei. We'd purchased a HOLO card several years ago in anticipation of riding the rail and never used it. Holo is Hawaiian for to go or to ride.
You'll notice Diane and Art climbing up those stairs? 😆 I followed them on the escalator.
After about a half hour we arrived at the Kalihi Transit Center.
We got off the train but then realized we should have just stayed on since it was going to go right back to Kapolei where we got on.
It didn't matter. The next train came in 10 minutes and we got on.
Dave (the professional photographer) suggested that we go to the front (back?) of the train so we could have the big window to look out of.
This was loads of fun!
We could see that if you weren't loaded down with too many suitcases, it's about a 15 minute walk from the station to the entrance of the airport.
This would be promising in an emergency.
Once we got back to Kapolei, Dave and Diane drove us to the Island Vintage restaurant.
That was also loads of fun and I especially enjoyed their Pure Mango Smoothie.
It had been a wonderful expedition and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
When Dave and Diane dropped us off, Dave called out, "What do you think about trying the zipline 😲 next?"
Hmmm....

Yep, looking forward to your ride on the zip line. Not MINE, you understand. And your lunch looks yummy.

Kay of Musings: I really do want to do it… sigh… after I’m done with my vertigo problem. 🤞🏼
DeleteI wouldn't have considered it until seeing your pictures of a deserted subway car. I'm not sure I've ever been the only one on a subway car before.
ReplyDeleteThat is really neat! Is it expensive to ride? Kind of nice to have a car to yourselves.
ReplyDeleteit looks wonderful and i was happy to see those smiles and know you had fun!! now...about the zipline, that is a must!!!! i have done that twice and i loved it!!
ReplyDeleteThat sounded fun. Lovely views - it's always nice to see things from a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteWhat a ride being up on the rail! From looking at the rail map, it seems the "more important" part is being built last. Hope you didn't trip your vertigo too much. I got dizzy just looking at your photos! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: I took a Meclizine before we left. Saw my doctor yesterday. He’s sending me back to the ENT who diagnosed it before as PPPD. Sigh…. It’s supposed to last 3 months to lifetime. Arrrghhh!
DeleteWhat a fun excursion! John and I love taking the light rail to Seattle; it's so much cheaper, easier and stress-free. We also took the Sounder (commuter rail) once and that was also great. It's a shame that these go so far over budget since they are very needed!
ReplyDeleteLooks like loads of fun! Reminded of a similar ride our group of friends took when our Pune Metro was ready…..with the difference that our rail was FULL!
ReplyDeleteAh, the Skyline debacle. It was originally approved because it went to the University of Hawaii Manoa. I was opposed to it because I knew how long and expensive construction in Hawaii was. The H-3 took 30 years to complete!
ReplyDeleteI also rode it with my 104 year old friend Esther before it was open to the public so it was also empty. I must admit I enjoyed it although I thought it should have a more Hawaiian identity. Door announcement will say that the doors will open on the "right" or "left". I thought it should say "makai" (ocean side) or "mauka" (mountain side) since it runs parallel to the ocean and no matter what, doors only open one side or the other. With the way it is going now, it will cost a billion dollars per mile to complete.
However, I do load my Holo card so I can ride it one of these days from the airport to Waipahu to pick up some poke and treats from Taniokas. One of these days.
Kay of Musings: We had just moved back here (after 35 years) from Chicago in 2006. We thought it would be a great idea to go to the UH since we know how convenient light rail is. However, our friends were strongly opposed to it because they’d lived here all their lives and knew how the Hawaii government runs. Sigh… and they were really right. The rail WON’T go to the UH as planned and it’s costing 3 times what they projected. You and our other friends here were right all along. REALLY REALLY sadly right. And no bathrooms and no parking at most places? 😖😳☹️
DeleteFun times!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a great adventure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice outing!
ReplyDeleteA lovely outing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your photographs and that big window was great to look out from.
All the best Jan
Fun escapade. I love a train.
ReplyDeleteOur Link Light Rail has been operational now for more that ten years, and more is being built. A northern section was opened last year. A new section going south opens next month. The airport and the stadiums are connected and get lots of traffic, as do downtown and commuter traffic. There is never enough parking. It all is costing much more that predicted and is often disparaged, but we who use if love it.
ReplyDeleteLight Rail would have been a far better option in both time to construct and dollars to build.
DeleteThat's a good trip right in Hawaii
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the monorail I took at the DFW airport. That thing was so slow though.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun adventure, and honestly, riding the Skyline sounds like the ultimate "because it's there" experience. That budget inflation is absolutely wild—from four billion to over twelve is just staggering. You hit the nail on the head; what's a billion here or there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great adventure. But Kay! That plate in front of you is MASSIVE! Did you manage to eat it all???
ReplyDeleteActually, Art helped me eat a lot of my dish and he brought half of his home. :-)
DeleteNo crowds? It appears, in your pictures, that you had the whole place to yourself!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! No more stack in waipahu! So much change so much change. But I'm happy to see that people are starting to use the train and I think it's going to be a huge success because who wants to sit in that traffic everyday!
