RIMPAC Welcoming Our Allies

Art and I had gone to the commissary to get some groceries after my vertigo physical therapy session. We decided to have our lunch at the food court there.

While enjoying our shared plate lunch we looked over the balcony railing and saw the flags welcoming the nations who were here for RIMPAC.

The sign says ALOHA & WELCOME RIMPAC. Noticing the flags we made a contest between us to see who could recognize more flags. OK... Japan, Canada, Britain, Korea, Sweden, Australia, Mexico. And then... hmmmm... (You know I could never be on the Jeopardy game show.)

This is from the Hawaii New Now website:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The world’s largest maritime training event kicked off Wednesday at Pearl Harbor.

Forty maritime vessels and five submarines from 31 nations are gathered in waters off Hawaii for Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026.

There also 140 aircraft and more than 25,000 service members participating in this biennial exercise.

Military leaders say RIMPAC fosters a spirit of cooperation and inter-operability between the participating countries.

And from the Navy website, I got the countries that were participating:

As much as it's nice to see the participation of the countries biennially, there is worry that the testing of the live bombs and missiles on our waters are harming the ocean creatures living here.

It's hard...

However, it was fun to see members from other countries walking about the commissary and hoping they were enjoying their stay in Hawaii.

How many can you recognize?

    1. OMG! I just looked it up. And the flag of England is different from the British Isles flag, etc. As for the flag of London, I found this: The flag of the City of London (the historic square mile) is identical to the English flag—a red St. George's Cross on a white background—except it features an upright red sword in the upper-left quadrant. This sword represents the weapon that beheaded Saint Paul, the patron saint of the city.

  3. I got about the same number as you listed, seven. I struggle with the three bar flags of two or three colors. There is just so many. I did get the Philippine flag but I suppose I had a bit of an advantage on that one!

  6. I had to read about rimpac. I had no idea. It sounds rather frightening. And…I didn’t know many of the flag countries.

I do love jeopardy and watch it daily.

    1. Kay of Musings: We watch Jeopardy with our dinner and are always so impressed that the contestants can think under all that pressure.

  9. My one trip to Hawaii was one of the highpoints of my adult life, truly. Just in passing, we switched to the Maple Leaf flag on the centennial year of becoming a nation. For the first hundred years, we used a British ensign. Canadians are a bit weird, eh?

  10. I wouldn't recognize very many flags! I love the game though. Like you, I'm not sure how I feel about the exercises and their impact on marine life.

  11. We had a similar flag identification experience in Europe this summer as there were flag everywhere celebrating the World Cup. I need to improve my skills in this area, ha.

  12. I have heard of RIMPAC. I'm surprised some of the very small countries are participating. I'd heard that sonar hurts dolphins. I thought the militaries were shooting blanks. Hope the marine animals are hiding. I'd love to see a commissary sometime. I didn't know it had a food court too. Stay safe arouind the maneuvers. Linda in Kansas

    1. Kay of Musings: If you’re in Hawaii, anybody can go to the food court. You can even enter the commissary, but you need a military ID to purchase anything.
