Art and I both have summer birthdays. We go to Starbucks once a week when we go to the mall with friends for our weekly walk and refresher drink. I therefore have enough stars (200) in my account to get a free drink.
So we did it again. We've been doing it since 2017 when the barista told me about it in Washington, D.C. He told me I could have any flavor, any size. I actually wrote a blog post about how I got the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino. I loved it... but I haven't seen that flavor offered since.
Ah well... I ordered my usual birthday Mocha Frappuccino and got Art a free Matcha Frappuccino. And yes, I got the ventis.
And then we went to our favorite spot under beautiful shower trees and savored the treat.
I happened to look out the window and saw this bird pecking away at the fallen shower tree flower petals.
I've seen them a lot and figured they must be in the cardinal family just from the head shape with the red feathers. But there was a cardinal with a brown head too. I told Art it was probably a female. He felt it must be a juvenile.
Soooo... I asked ChatGPT what kind of birds they were and if the brown headed bird was a female.
This is what I got:
These are Red-crested Cardinals (Paroaria coronata), a species native to South America that has become well established in Hawaii, especially on Oahu and the Big Island.
The difference in head color is most likely due to age, not sex.
- The bird on the left has a vivid, bright scarlet-red head and crest. This is an adult, whose red feathers have fully developed.
- The bird on the right has a duller, brownish-red head. This is most likely a juvenile (young bird) that hasn’t yet molted into its bright adult plumage.
Male and female Red-crested Cardinals look very similar, so the intensity of the red isn’t a reliable way to tell males from females. Instead:
- Adults of both sexes have brilliant red heads, white cheeks and throat, gray backs, and pale underparts.
- Juveniles have browner or orangish-red heads and generally look less sharply colored until they mature.
From your photo, the left bird appears to be carrying a small flower petal or leaf in its beak, which they sometimes pick up while foraging. They mainly eat seeds, fruits, and insects.
It’s a nice capture showing what is probably an adult and a young Red-crested Cardinal together, which is common during the breeding season.
It was nice of ChatGPT to give me a compliment about taking a nice photo.
And sitting next to me in the car, I looked up at Art who was looking quite proud of himself. 😎
That was quite a fulsome answer. Pretty impressive really. And I think both guesses were reasonable.
ReplyDeleteThank you for letting us see the beautiful cardinals. I thought they were woodpeckers. Enjoy your birthday treat.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.... They do sort of have a woodpecker head, doesn't it?
DeleteBetty, do you have a blog too? I thought you were on my list, but I can't find you.

DeleteAhhh... thank you, Betty. I see you're already on my sidebar.
DeleteThose are such gorgeous birds; we have nothing that striking here. (that I've seen anyway) I always try to get my birthday free drink and make it a Venti. :) Happy Birthday!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to both of you!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful birds!! Happy Birthday to both of you! I am glad you enjoyed your Birthday coffees!
ReplyDeleteThey are such beautiful birds.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to you and Art.
Happy Birthday Art and Kay, well celebrated! Interesting about the red-crested cardinals.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to you two fellow summer birthday friends. I get my free birthday latte without using points, but only on my actual birthday day.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you and Art! DH and I have summer birthdays too. He loves coffee, but doesn't like Starbucks. I however, do really like their mocha Fraps! Haven't had one in a while. My new drink is Paris Bagguette's Vanilla sweet cream cold brew. And Ive never seen a red crested Cardinal. We get the all red males and brown females here.
ReplyDeleteAlways important to treat yourself every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's an awesome description they gave you.
ReplyDeleteMy cousins on Kauai wrote me that the Red-crested cardinals are also called Brazilian cardinals.
DeleteHappy Double Birthday! There must be a seed in some of those showertree petals for that Dad and Kid cardinal duo to want them. Kansas cardinals seem to not have the tufted mohawk tops, just smooth crew cuts. Linda
ReplyDeleteLOL, Happy birthday to both you and your Genius! I use Claude.ai - who is so very nice and we greet each other with aloha and mahalo. He also gives me encouraging remarks.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you and Art and I very much enjoyed learning about the Red-crested Cardinals. I remember them from our trips to Hawaii but never saw a juvenile with the brown head. I learned something new today. Thank you Kay! I also had my weekly treat from Starbucks today and had my freebie a week ago.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday wishes to you both.
ReplyDeleteLovely birds.
All the best Jan
Happy Birthday to you and Art. You celebration sounds wonderful.
