This evening, we had just locked the doors and closed all the windows downstairs when we heard running feet and a hand at the door. We were all rather shocked wondering what kind of burglar would be trying to get in. OK... so I'm being a bit melodramatic here.
I unlocked the door and peered outside.
It was my brother! Good gracious! Dennis thrust a little box out at me and said, "These are really, really good. You have to try it." And then... like a magical Menehune (Hawaiian version of a leprechaun) he was gone.
I opened the box and found these little fried balls of poi (paste made from the taro plant) mochi (glutinous rice). I know. I know. It sounds pretty bad but I knew just looking at those little suckers that it was going to be scrumptious!
I know. I know. Bad for me.
My mom looked at them, eyes gleaming. Art had that knowing grin that told me he was going to make me exercise a bit more tomorrow (unless it rains). The outside was crunchy and warm and when you bit into these donut hole sized pieces of heaven you got a sweet, soft and sticky paste that just made you smile.
Yuuuuummmmmm....
I know. I know. Only low carb veggies for me tomorrow.
I don't understand. You thought it was a burglar and you opened the door? Lucky for you it was Dennis.
ReplyDeleteKay, We saw the little stand outside of Walmart as Dennis picked me up from work. I told Dennis that a friend had bought some and gave me one at lunch time. We KNEW you guys would LOVE these...I'm just a little confused over the name...UNCLE Lani's? hmmmm.
ReplyDeletePoi mochi! yumm.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had one of those in a dog's age. That and malasadas.
One of these days, I'll break my diet and buy some.
Mmm, I want some!
ReplyDeleteYou've got a darling brother to drive by and leave you some -- very sweet!
They sound wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYum. Why is it that all those things that taste so good, are so bad for us. Somethings wrong with this.
ReplyDeletei think we have this same food here in the Philippines.it's yummy!
ReplyDeletedoughnuts hawaiian style...it's hard to stay focused on a diet isn't it?
ReplyDeleteYUMMY! They sound absolutely divine!
ReplyDeleteThis morning while eating breakfest (mochi--that's another story) K said, "Ganma running!" and after I repeated to her, "Grandma's running?" She corrected herself and said,"Ganma walking" while nodding her head.
ReplyDeleteWhat's one treat once in a while?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great brother to share the treat with you..The treats sound SO good. A treat once in awhile is heavenly isn't it?
ReplyDeleteDina: True, I should have looked out the window first. However, Art and my mom had my back so I figured I'd be safe.
ReplyDeleteNancy: I haven't had anything like this in forever. It was definitely wonderful. Thanks so much!
Gigi: There were even better than malasadas (granulated sugar coated, deep fried donut hole sized pastries), I thought. But then again... I haven't had malasadas in forever either.
Susan: He is the best brother I have, OK... he's my only sibling but he's the best sibling, too.
Bobbie: Oh, they were, they were!
Joyce: I know! Hot fudge sundaes, creme brulee, French silk pie.... sigh....
Rachel: Do you guys eat poi in the Philippines, too?
Lin: This pre-diabetic diet is the pits! I'm having the worst time.
Michele: I'll bet they have incredible stuff in Canada also. I brought back Dulse (?) for my brother and he LOVED it!
Tif: Yikes! That's amazing and true. I know she always says "Papa running," which he usually is. You can tell her, "Papa is making Grandma walk all the time." (when it's not raining)
Mare: You are totally incredible. Here you are laid up in bed in the hospital and you were kind enough to read my posts to leave comments. I wish I could send you some of this poi mochi!
Cheryl: Sigh... You're right. Once in a while is OK. Once in a while I should be able to have a carb loaded saimin (noodle soup), a Dream cake, a Frappacino, etc. I am so bad. I'll be getting my blood test results on Thursday. We'll see what happens after that.
I don't know whether to say "yum" or not. Poi? But anything fried in fat is usually good!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great introduction! You got us all excited with anticipation, tnen tugged us right into the moment. I could see every thing - clearly. And, the taste...you have my mouth watering way over here in Texas.
ReplyDeleteNow, I have to take a break and go eat something to satisfy that urge for something good you gave me. Hahaaa!!!
I suppose it is a treat if you like them. I never tasted them but it does sound good.
ReplyDeleteOh, they sound yummy! I want some, too!
ReplyDeleteI have no comments about Poi, I wanted to tell you I bought fabric and cut out a bag to make, I haven't sewed in forever, I hope I remember how to thread my sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteLinda: You're right. Unfortunately anything cooked in fat does taste good.
ReplyDeletedellgirl: I just know you went and got some nice healthy carrots or celery to eat, right?
Pat and Abe: I know it doesn't sound good but take my word for it, it was wooonderful.
Sylvia: I could send you some but it really needs to be eaten warm.
Bella: I hope you post a photo of your bag. I got to use my sewing machine today to darn my jeans. I'm so happy!
That is the best kind of robber..one who brings sweet treats..LOL..
ReplyDeleteOh they look good. And it helps you have your own personal trainer at home. You have to have something bad for you every now and then though.
ReplyDeleteHi Kay
ReplyDeleteI came to your blog by way of Nan at Letters from a Hill Farm, and I'm so happy to have found you ... hearing/reading about your life in Hawaii and your travels. The banner is gorgeous
I worked in Hawaii for three years (my nickname was Menahune). Can't say I miss it, except maybe for the flowers and fruit
On the subject of really gross/unusual food, I wrote an entry on my Nothing Special about SPAM. Spam Musubi .... yuuummmm
Hi Janice! It's so wonderful to meet you. Menehune? Are you petite? Hmmm... I'll stop by your blog to visit.
ReplyDeleteEverything in moderation...that's my motto! If you only have one then it's not so bad. I do find it hard to stop at one though! Cute comment from Tif and KC!
