Bed Update 2

We went in this morning to America's Mattress and met with the other owner and Brian, the Serta Sales Manager who explained even more about mattresses. They helped us select the Felicity latex mattress (the firmest of the latex mattresses) that has less foam and padding which are likely to have depressions after a while. Our new mattress, Felicity will be delivered next week.

Here's what we've learned about mattress buying:

1. Start with a company you can trust. We were lucky to meet the actual owner, Chris who really tried his best to insure our comfort.

2. Lay on the mattress in the position you sleep in for 15 minutes if you can. We found that hard to do with salespeople around but you really should. Try closing your eyes and tuning things out.

3. Make sure the store has a good return policy or "comfort" guarantee. Otherwise, you're stuck like we were with our first mattresses. I would really emphasize getting that comfort guarantee.

4. If you like firm mattresses, stay away from the plush, pillow top and extra padding. I was told they will gradually compress to your body impression.

5. Side sleepers tend to need a bit softer mattress while back and stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress.

I'm sure there's a lot more to learn but that's enough for me. We'll see how the Felicity stacks up when we get it next week. I'm ready for this to be over. I don't want to lose any more sleep over it!

  2. There's nothing more important than a comfy bed and a good night's sleep, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you once the new mattress arrives. At least you seem to have found a really good shop who care about customer service.

  4. Congrats on the purchase. I hate it when The Hubby starts on his quest to replace our mattress. I just get it all broken in and then he's ready to start all over again. Oh my aching back.

  6. Interesting information, Kay. We recently purchased a new mattress for our bed, and we went with the one that felt the firmest to me when I lay down on it. But, like you, I couldn't do the 15-minute-lie-down in front of the sales people! So far, so good. I love a very firm mattress.

  8. Here's hoping that you are soon having sweet dreams! I will have to try the 15 minute "trial rest period" next time I shop for a mattress, although its hard with an "audience" watching you!

  9. It's such a hassle when you have to return something. You were so smart to get a satisfaction guarentee.
Everybody is different in what they like and sometimes what feels right in the store does not hold up when you get it home!
    You are a warrior!

  10. You sleep on your tummy??? That's something I never do, cause it would be too uncomfortable. I sleep on my back, but occasionally on my side.

I'll keep your store in mind the next time I shop for a bed.

  12. Good luck with this one. I hope all goes well. My favorite is Beauty Rest. I've had 3 and will probably go that way when I need a new one.

  13. Thanks for keeping us posted on the mattress Kay! We've spent our summer on air mattresses and sleeping bags on the floor, and I'm learning just how important a good mattress really is! Good luck with the new one.
