Ricochet Cold

Mom is not feeling well again. I was just feeling like I'd gotten the cold licked when mom started coughing. Now she's got a headache and is not feeling well again. I made another huge pot of chicken soup for us. I'd like to get her some congestion/cold medicine but they all have warnings about being bad for people with high blood pressure and she's got quite high blood pressure readings. I don't think we need to get back to the doctor yet but I'm wondering if anybody knows a good cold and cough over the counter medicine that's OK for somebody with high blood pressure.

  1. Oi, it's hanging on at your house, that "bug." If you guys get a blood test they might already find chicken soup in your blood. ;)

How 'bout inhaling steam with euchalyptus oil/leaves in the water?
    Gargling with hot salt water?
I heard an old Yemenite herbalist (who has a following in Jerusalem) talking on the radio: A cure for pneumonia is after a hot shower rub olive oil on the torso in a towel (and also plastic to keep the sheets clean and to bind the towel) and go to bed for the night.

    Good luck.

  2. I meant: wrap up your torso in the towel and over that, some Saran Wrap or whatever.

  5. Hi Kay! So sorry you and your Mom are not feeling well. There is an over the counter cold remedy that says it won't raise blood pressures. I can't remember the name right now but I'm sure if you ask a pharmacist they will know. Feel better soon both of you!

  6. Personally, I don't think any OTC cough medicines work. You are just paying money for nothing!

For my coughing, Dr. Loui prescribes ORGANIDIN 200 mg tablets, and I take it every 6 hrs.

Works better than Robiussin, which is worthless!

  7. Love your clip art for today's post.

Perhaps you are passing this bug around in your house. Might be time to turn up the heat on your dishwasher. A few days of disposable plates, glasses, forks, etc. might also help.

Might also help to wipe door knobs, faucets, etc with anticeptic wipes, as well as using those kinds of things on your hands.

  8. I've seen an ad for a cold medicine for those with high BP, I am sure the pharmacist would be able to help you out with that. Hope your mom is feeling better soon! I have also heard after an illness dispose of your toothbrush as that can harbor nasty bugs!

  9. Sorry your mom is sick again. Wash your hands all day long so you don't get it again, too. I wish I had a remedy for you, but I think the doctor is your best bet because of her age.

  10. Oh no! Hate when that happens! I think my son and I may be doing it too. Hope you are both tip top again soon.

  11. I am so sorry that your Mom is not feeling well Kay, and you too having such a horrible cold. I don't know much about over the counter medicines. However, a good comforting drink for me when I get a cold is juice of a lemon in the bottom of a cup, plus a little grated fresh ginger, hot water over the top with honey to taste. It's a good shot of Vit C, the ginger is supposed to be very good for you and whether it works or not it is a very soothing drink when you have a cold. Tell your Mom from me, "Feel better soon!" You too :)

  12. That is such a lousy way to begin the new year! I'm so sorry for both of you. I do think Dina's suggestions are probably the very best and without having to worry about the over the counter meds and your Mother's high blood pressure.

I'll keep holding good thoughts for you! Sending lots of hugs!

  13. If she's not diabetic, slowly sucking chocolate is good for a sore throat and cough. Hope you both feel better soon.

  14. Kay;

So sorry about your Mom being sick again. Seems like our house keeps sharing viruses too!
Rest is about all I know to do...oh and chicken soup!

  16. I find hot peppermint herbal tea clears the sinuses and is good on the tummy. Get well soon.

  19. Oh no -- I hope you both feel better soon! Lots of hot tea and rest should work... of course it's hard to rest when you're coughing, isn't it!

  20. We use mucinex, but I don't know whether that affects blood pressure. I hope everyone is healthy before your trip so that you don't have to stress about it.
Hugs are very theraputic...chocolate is too!!

  21. I wish I could thing of something that would help. I can't take most of the over-the-counter stuff but children's benadryl seems to help me for colds, allergies, etc. It doesn't knock me out.

  22. I'm sorry to hear the germs are still having their way in your household.
I don't really know much about remedies of otc medications. Since I retired, I haven't really had a cold. Before then, I just usually let it run it's course.

  23. Your poor mum, she must be feeling very sorry for herself. I'm with Denise on this one, avoid over-the-counter medications and pump her full of Vitamin C, and make her rest until she's properly better this time. Give her my best wishes.
