Art just showed me an article from an Arthritis Today magazine flyer. I always thought I only had to worry about grapefruit which includes our much loved pomelos (zabon in Hawaii). Although I don't see it listed here, I do know that grapefruit blocks statins like Lipitor.
I'm on a med-vacation from Fosamax, but I was surprised to see it stated that apples and oranges are also blockers of that medication. I'll have to watch this when I'm put back on Fosamax some day. This is the first time I've heard of this. And coffee too?
I take Synthroid which is a thyroid hormone. So milk and yogurt are not good?
I'm not taking Fosamax for my bone health, so I need the calcium from milk and yogurt. I'm taking calcium supplements but I've been told it's far better to get your calcium from food.
Wow! How do you keep all this straight? I only take Synthroid (thyroid) and Lipitor (cholesterol). What do people do when they have to take more than two or three pills.
Good grief!

Too many medications! Another reason I am opposed to these meds. You cannot eat like you really should. Healthy eating is much better than the medications.
ReplyDeleteWhen you take a lot of medications you don't read such information. It would drive you crazy if you did.
ReplyDeletemy son's also on synthroid. I love grapefruit but don't have it too often, seems like so much acid.
ReplyDeleteI take several prescriptions for several disorders, and you're right, it's hard to know what to eat or not sometimes.

I agree plus have to cut out sugar-it's not fair....
ReplyDeleteI think perhaps this article doesn't give enough information. I also take synthroid. I was told that calcium supplements should not be taken for at least four hours after the synthroid. As far as milk or yogurt usage, I have been told that I could take those one hour after taking synthroid. I always wait at least an hour after taking my morning synthroid before I eat anything.
ReplyDeleteI take six pills, I exercise, And I use two sprays. I tell the doc every time I see here that I know I am over medicated. I also eat the best I can sans grapefruit. Sometimes all you can do is punt.
ReplyDeleteI would rather live for a little shorter time and be happy and enjoy life, rather than spend the whole time worrying about which medications I should or shouldn't be taking, or which foods I should or shouldn't be taking. I try to eat and drink healthily and exercise a little and only take those medications which actually affect my quality of life. I declined to take statins as they made me feel so depressed along with other medications which have made me feel unwell.
ReplyDeleteThe combination in #4 can catch up with patients sometimes. English Teacher has it right, that you can eat what you like and take meds, sometimes keeping them an hour or a few hours apart. I would go on a doc's advise before restricting myself as in this list. Usually the combination isn't of detriment to the action of the med for the doc to even mention food restrictions. If you need the med, better to take it. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteWho can keep up? I take nothing and hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI take Simvastatin (Zocor) and have been careful not to eat any grapefruit (even the beloved pomelo)....never heard of apples and oranges too. Timing when to eat the foods that block seems to be a good idea. I take my statin and beta blocker after dinner, so maybe it is safe to eat these foods in the morning.

Goodness, I only take synthyroid too but the yogurt and milk, no problem...hate the stuff. I try to get the calcium stuff in my foods as much as possible. Oh I hate all this pill stuff really. Sometimes I worry that it is just too much.
