Yesterday was National Walking Day. So yes, of course Art was adamant about getting out there and taking a walk, rain or shine. Luckily for me it wasn't raining, but it was a little chilly. We've been breaking records here for cold weather.
No seriously. Art says he went for his run this morning and it was about 59 degrees. We have an outdoor thermometer by our side door. I was actually able to wear a long pair of jeans. I haven't worn long jeans since our trip to California in January.
I had to take the little sweater off by the time I got to the top of the hill because I had to exert myself.
I liked smelling the plumerias as I passed this area. You can see them scattered on the ground.
I'm afraid I probably wouldn't keep walking if I had to do it on my own. The American Heart Association does encourage you to walk with friends or coworkers. I even told my friend, Diane we should do some mall walking sometime.... perhaps when she retires in a few years.
Meanwhile, I've got my best friend coaxing, encouraging, pushing, cajoling, urging me to walk every night that it's not raining. In fact, every time I look out the window after dinner, Art says, "No it's not raining. I know you're thinking of doing a rain dance."
Don't ask me where he gets that idea.

You two are very entertaining! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteYou could get a rain stick and turn it up and down behind Art's back, like when he is reading the paper, and maybe it will enter his mind that the weather is not right for your walk? ;)
ReplyDeleteHe'll just check the weather on his computer. Hard to get much past him. I've tried.
DeleteGood for you getting out there Kay!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to me how much warmer I feel after exercising. I leave the apartment feeling that it's cool inside, but when I return, I'm too warm for a while, until I cool down. Glad I haven't traveled to Hawaii to get away from the cold, I would be very disappointed. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf you would like warmth, summer is the time to come. Winter is also the rainy season.
DeleteYou need some "fun" walking destinations that will motivate you to get moving. If I'm by myself I don't like to walk just to be walking, but I can get to two different Walgreens (one a half mile away and the other two miles away). If I only need a couple of things I can walk to one of two grocery stores two miles one way, or a couple of restaurants.
ReplyDeleteMy problem are the hills in my neighborhood. I hate steps and hills.
Deleteyou are lucky to have such a husband who cares for your health as he does, good for you Kay, keep walking!!
ReplyDelete59 60 degrees would be called right down balmy here!
I do remember how I'd wear t-shirts in spring when the temps reached 60. It felt warm after a cold winter in Chicago.
DeleteHaving a dog who lets me know when it is time for a walk keeps me walking. I usually enjoy it once I get started, unless it is really cold. You have a great cheerleader in Art.
ReplyDeleteI started a seated arthritis class yesterday as my knee bothers me if I walk too much. Walking is such good exercise-go for it!
ReplyDeleteI also think that you are fortunate to have a husband who encourages you to exercise--but who also has a sense of humor about it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been on a real nice walk in a long time
ReplyDeleteI won't ask! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you walk together, though. And it's wonderful to be able to smell flowers all year round. This morning it was 20° here -- not very spring-like. Last night I actually dragged two of my baby potted roses inside. They were just delivered and have leaves on them and haven't had time to harden like the others have. We're really looking forward to the warmer weather.
I do enjoy seeing flowers year around. They cheer me every time I see them.
DeleteI can certainly relate to you feelings about walking. It is very hard for me to push myself out the door to walk.
ReplyDeleteI can smell that lovely perfume from here. Yea, walking outside is a far far better thing than going to the gym. :)
ReplyDeleteIn my case, whenever I suggest we do some walking outdoors, husband quickly says that I can't. He fears having to carry me all the way back home lol
ReplyDeleteL...w
Your husband must be really strong. The ONLY time Art was ever able to lift me was when he had to get me out of the car when our son was about to be born. I was the panic adrenalin.
DeleteLucky you to have a hubby who likes to walk with you. David is under doctor's orders to not walk unnecessarily.
ReplyDeleteOne of the many wonderful things about having a dog is that you just have to get out and walk. In the mornings Ruby and I walk for about fifty minutes. We're lucky to have fields nearby, and she doesn't seem to mind doing the same walk each day, while I listen to talking books on my iPod whilst we walk. Mind you, I'd love to be able to walk in just jeans and a jumper. At the moment I'm wearing long thermal underwear under my double layered waterproof and windproof trousers, two pairs of socks and boots, several layers underneath my anorak, a woolly hat and thermal gloves. I do occasionally get warm enough after striding out for a while to take off my gloves, but not for long.
ReplyDeleteYikes! That's a LOT of clothes to have to put on. It's much easier to walk a dog in Hawaii.
DeleteWell, if it was "walking day" then I'm glad I got out after dinner for my short, two mile version. I gardened in the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteToday the rains came, so I did my indoor ten miles on my stationary bike. I like walking because I can be outside, and I am happy being a solitary walker. I like biking because I can read.
I really admire your determination and stamina, Linda. I wish you lived here and could do the Aloha Run/walk with me.
DeleteEver since I got my pedometer I have enjoyed racking up the steps. Makes it seem like more of an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteWow! 59 degrees in Honolulu. The coldest it's ever been in Hilo since we moved there, according to our thermometer, is 62. So wonder if Hilo had record cold too.
