A dear friend of mine gave me this beautiful pearl necklace. However, it is strung on a silver type chain. The silver is now tarnished. How can you clean the tarnish without damaging the pearls with the cleaning solution?
It may not look too bad in the photo, but it is obviously tarnished when I wear it. Any good tips out there?

Take it to a jeweler, or buy one of those sterling silver jewelry polishing cloths. I thought some jewelry I borrowed would need a jeweler's care, but the friend loaning them to me, just buffed and rubbed with the cloth and they were shiny again. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI bought some liquid cleaning polish for silver from Walmart and I just dunk the silver jewellery in there for 10 seconds and rinse, it works well, but don't know about the pearls.

ReplyDeleteSilver polishing cloths. You can buy them anywhere, and it takes a bit of rubbing, but it does work.
ReplyDeleteToothpaste works well to clean tarnished silver, but you'd have to be careful not to get it on the pearls.

ReplyDeleteDo you know a friendly nurse who would let you use their autoclave? My podiatrist some years ago suggested I put my rings into his and they came out beautifully.
ReplyDeletePearls are soft and so fragile. I don't think I'd try cleaning it myself. I'd have it restrung on thread by a professional. Hope your family is enjoying Father's Day.

ReplyDeleteHow about an oldfashioned jeweler's cloth. It won't get into the cavities, but it shines the parts that show. That's what I use. Dianne
ReplyDeleteI have some tarnished sterling silver jewelry too and yesterday while looking over it was trying to recall what you had posted about WD40. I don't think pearls would react too well to the oily substance so I'd be careful using it there. On the TV shopping channel (QVC or HSN) they once promoted a jewelry cleaner which you spray on and instantly rinse. They say it is mild enough for any jewelry type. I've noticed the older sterling silver tarnishes if you don't wear it for awhile, no rhodium plating over the silver.
