Quite a while ago, Kay (another one) of An Unfittie's Guide to Adventurous Travel posted a photo of herself sitting on a travel cane-chair. We'd been wondering what we could use for mom when we take her to Utah, Arizona and Nevada to check out all the canyons in the area.
Ever since I saw Denise of An English Girl Rambles' post about Antelope Canyon and showed it to Art, we've had it on our bucket list. The only problem is that it's a rather long 2.5 hour tour. We'll be in the cave for a couple of hours and we wanted to make sure mom wouldn't get too worn out.
Kay's idea of the cane-chair sounded like a wonderful solution. We wanted something stable, strong and easy to sit on. We looked around town and found this at Don Quijote. It was $19.99 down to $10.99.
It's very light and relatively easy to carry. Mom sat on it and pronounced it comfortable so we're relieved. It's not a cane, but mom doesn't really need a cane so we think this should work out well. The plastic seat is made of plastic that I have a feeling won't last all that long, but it is sturdy enough.
Well... we'll see how it works out on our travel since we're not bringing the wheelchair this time.

Cool; I haven't seen one like that. I'd seen the cane that becomes a tripod with a tinier chair. You could make a backpack-like strap on your's, and have Mom hike it into the cave! (Just kidding.) DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. You are role models in the way you take care of your mom Kay.
ReplyDeleteIt looks perfect for your purposes, Kay. I look forward to hearing how it works out. That's still a very long tour, but this should help a great deal. :-)
ReplyDeletelooks like just the answer...
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't want to be the one having to shlepp it around, but it looks sturdy.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I see the little old ladies in black, on pilgrimage from Greece to Jerusalem, with folding wooden stools strapped to their back like a backpack. It is hard work being a pilgrim or even a tourist, esp. now in the hot summer.
Good luck to your Mom.
It looks substantial and balanced. Sitting down, even for just a few minutes, makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like it will work very well. I bet some of your fellow tourists wished they had the same idea.
ReplyDeleteThat will be very handy for her. You found the perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to look for something like this for myself! I've never been excited about the little cane/tripod chair
ReplyDeleteThis seat looks sturdy but also might be a little heavy. My husband had one with a canvas seat that was a life-saver when we walked any distance. A great idea. You take such good care of your Mother.
ReplyDeleteActually, this is very light and mom can even carry it herself if she wanted to.
DeleteYou give so many good tips on your blog that I had to go back and read all the posts I missed. I wish I had that seat while in San Francisco because the hills are steep and my knees are bad. There are no benches to be found anywhere either. But it would not have been easy placing this seat in my pocket book….
ReplyDeleteGood luck with this chair. I will be waiting to hear from you about the results. Dianne
ReplyDeleteWe just returned last night from the canyons and I now have a ton to write about. I AM glad we brought the chair.
DeleteDon't you just love Don Quiote? Lots of good value these days, and surprise clearances. I think it may be because of the weaker yen. The store may be clearing out the old products for much better values.

I really do and that chair was a perfect solution for us.
Deletewhat a great idea, , I hope you all have a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteConsumer alert: I went into a cave in Wisconsin. I was all right when the feeling was spacious. However, at one point the passageway narrowed just enough for a human being to squeeze through while standing up, admittedly, not crawling. Well, I learned something about myself very fast. Caves are not for me, and I wanted out right then and there. I was the only scaredy cat on the tour except for a wailing baby.
ReplyDeleteI just returned last night from Nevada, Utah and Arizona. It was an incredible trip! The wadi that we went into wasn't a cave so not quite as claustrophobic. But there were way too many people which ruins the experience. Still Antelope Canyon was truly impressive.
DeleteWhat a wonderful thing. :)
ReplyDeletehopefully it works out for the best
ReplyDeleteShoots! Gotta buy one for me!
ReplyDeleteAloha, Kay
Oh, how cool is this! What a great idea and, it looks like a very nice place to sit and take a breather. Mom's going to love it! Thanks for sharing this really helpful tip/idea.
ReplyDeleteNow that is neat and couldn't it still be used for balance? It would also be handy at events that do not have seating.
ReplyDeleteIt's not really very good for balance I think, but good when you need a moment to catch a breather.
Deletelooks good..maybe I should get one for my mum too..
ReplyDeleteThe last cave we visited, in Arizona, didn't allow us to carry anything with us. I hope this worked out for you.
ReplyDeleteIt did work well for us but not necessarily as we expected.
DeleteThanks for the link Kay. It's on our bucket list also, can't wait to get back there. You've started me thinking again about light-weight seats for traveling. These look ideal.
