Losing Sleep Over Losing Hair

Every so often I start worrying and picturing myself going bald.  One morning I woke up and found I'd lost this much just combing my hair!

I know, I know.  I've read about how you can lose between 40-120 strands a day.

I know, I know.  But it still freaks me out.

I see spaces now between roots.  Sigh...

I remember my grandmother losing her hair when she got older.  My brother laughs ruefully about his hair loss.  It's probably genetics.  Which only freaks me out even worse.  We have Alzheimers and hair loss in our genes.  Arrrghhh!

I asked my nurse practitioner, Kathy about it and she smiled kindly.  She said the only explanation could be a thyroid problem, but my tests are showing that I'm fine in that department.

"Is it the age thing?" I asked.

She smiled again.  Oh darn!

  1. oh Kay don't worry, I think our hair does thin but I don't think you will go bald.I was alarmed as well by my dropping hairs but I find I have more fall in summer, then it thickens in winter, maybe you're just noticing now, we can always buy wigs, red ones! Ones for everyday of the week, (just kidding), I hope, for both of us, lol

  2. Yeah, it's supposed to be something with hormones that change as we age. The same ones that cause women to lose hair from the crowns of their head are the same ones that make lip and chin hairs appear and grow more. Bummer, but I'd pick the bit of hair loss over the Alzheimers. Blame it on the China trip's smog exposure.
For guys: notice how they lose the hair on their legs as they age, even if they didn't lose too much from their scalp? Getting older has it's evils. You two are in grand shape, healthy and enjoying life. That's better than lots of folks. Cheers, DrumMajor

  4. I know lots of other women who worry about going bald, too. It's definitely something that happens to SOME people as they age, like me. My sister, however, has the same full head of hair she had when she was young. Something she inherited, I suspect, that I didn't. I hope you don't worry too much about it, Kay. You've got such a wonderful life! :-)

  5. My mom's head sheds all the time. She had to call the plumber a few months ago because it had clogged up the bathtub to the point where it got deep down in the pipes as well. But I don't she's going bald. Think it's just age plus stress

What I am going to say, probably doesn't apply to you at all, but you just got me to thinking.

I suspect you eat a lot of sea weed so one would not think of you being hyperthyroid but when I hear women complaining of hair loss, I always think of the thyroid. Also, living in Hawaii, the soil probably contains a lot of iodine, which is a good thing. Other symptoms include being cold, fatigued and tired, can't sleep well. I don't think it's one bit natural that a woman has to lose hair as she gets older. It's usually a deficient hormone as anonymous said and that can be corrected. I never go to allopathic doctors. If I have any thyroid symptoms I order a lab test online that tests my TSH, T-4, T-3 and antibodies. Then I go to an ND to decide the results. Most MD's rarely think to test your thyroid. I take iodine every day because I live inland where there is no iodine in the soil. Remember too, that calcium depletes iodine .... say..... if they are taken too close together. None of this may apply to you at all, just a suggestion. Also, undue and sudden stress can deplete your iodine and every cell in your body needs iodine.

  8. I have very thick hair, so when I lose some to my comb or brush, I still have plenty left, but I worry anyway. I can't explain that!

  9. It's natural to shed hair. What I notice is that I no longer grow much hair under my arms or on my legs but I do on my upper lip and chin. It's natural for this to happen, so I don't worry about it.

  10. Not too bad if you're starting just now in your 60s. I lost a lot of hair about 10 years ago, just like how you describe. Husband noticed all my hairs on the floor. But today, I don't seem to be losing much. Fortunately I have thick hair and it poofs so I can't see scalp. But I know I have a lot less hair than before.

  11. I am bald but since my surgery am starting to grow back my hair. Just popping in to see what's going on. Trying to read up a bit before I start blogging again.

  12. I worry less about losing my hair than I do about the increasing growth of whiskers! I'm constantly wielding the tweezers these days.

  13. I too loosed a lot of hair after coming to Kolkata..I loosed so much that recently I am scared of combing..two among every three people are complaining of hair loss..I think even the problem lies in the soil and water of the place you live..because when I go to my parents' place I do not loose any hair..

  14. Dang, I hate it when doctors give us that "age related" diagnosis. If you find a cure, please set us know. I am shedding like a St. Bernard myself.
