We don't get many Trick or Treaters these days. We had way too much candy left over last year. Times have changed.
When my brother and I were little, we'd run through the entire neighborhood on our own and come back with a HUGE bag of candy. There was no fear of scary people who might give you razors in apples or harm you in any way.

When our kids were little we lived in a neighborhood where everybody knew everybody, so there wasn't any fear there either. Our kids had a great time and loved going out with their friends.
Times have changed. Many parents now take their kids to organized Halloween parties where they know they are safe. I think we're just going to need one bag of candy this year. What is it like in your neighborhood? What's your favorite kind of candy? I confess I'm partial to Kit Kats and now they have it in dark chocolate!

I like Kit Kats, too. And Reese's peanut butter cups. And Almond Joys. And.... We haven't had a single trick or treater in the 14 years we've lived at this house. Times have changed, for sure.

I am partial to all things Reese's. Most of the parents around here still take their children out on Halloween (very safe area). But it seems these days that this area is becoming an exception.
ReplyDeleteI found some organic candies individually wrapped and low in sugar to hand out to kids. I can also eat it if I don't get many trick-or-treaters. Happy Halloween! :-)

DeleteI only had 6 last year, but had about 50 just five years ago. Seems to vary depending on the age of the kids in my neighborhood. Two families moved in across the street,. I like Butterfingers. Those are gone, but I still have a mixed candy bag left!
ReplyDeleteI remember the days when evil people made us take candy to be x-rayed before the kids could eat it. Went trick or treating once with my young son when it started to snow. Made a Power Ranger costume for him and part of one for his Golden Retriever. We later sold the outfits at a garage sale. If I'd known Power Rangers would still be popular 20 years later.....

Wow! You ARE ambitious to make a Power Ranger costume. The best I did was a ghost costume. Hmmm... Butterfingers? My granddaughter didn't have much of those. She had mostly Kit Kats. No dark chocolate either. Sheesh!
Deletethere are more children attending parties now instead of door to door Trick or Treating, gosh the photo is great of your children, my favorite Halloween treat is caramel apples, although I think is been 10 years since I had one, maybe i'm due, lol
ReplyDeleteWe used to have at least 100 kids, but now it's less than half that, mainly because the neighborhood's aged. At one time our street had a couple dozen kids, all now in their 20s.
ReplyDeleteI'm partial to ANY chocolate candy. In an effort to keep from eating it this year I bought Twizzlers and Jolly Ranchers to hand out. Hubby will take any leftovers to work.
I love Twizzlers too. My tummy is growling. I'd better go get some lunch.

ReplyDeleteYour are right, not as many trick or treaters as there used to be but we still get quite a few. Some of my grandkids will come over for pizza before going out on my street and then back to their own neighborhoods.

ReplyDeleteI am back from a trip and read all your tips – you had some good ones I had not heard about, like making a knot on the extension cord. As for trick or treaters, we have not had many in the last few years because we are not in a subdivision and our house is on a little hill with many trees around, so it is very dark. The other reason is that the kids from the subdivision near us have all grown up and moved away. My favorite candies are chocolate bars, dark chocolate, so I usually buy a bag, just in case, then we eat it….

ReplyDeleteToo funny! I wasn't even thinking about that, but it's true. I always preschedule my posts to go up at 12:30, just past midnight because of the time difference. I also have friends who read my posts in Hawaii before going to work so they like for me to have it ready for them to read it with their morning coffee.
DeleteThese times are certainly sadder than when my kids where growing up and we lived in Montana on an air base!! There was never any question about going Trick or Treating back then!! In the complex where I live now, they're not even allowed and there are good reasons to be glad for that, unfortunately!! Hope you have a safe, fun and tasty Halloween, Kay, and a lovely weekend!

ReplyDeleteMost of those Halloween horror stories are mostly paranoia. I always trick or treated door to door. We never did it in my neighborhood though, so my mom would always be around.

ReplyDeletewhen we were little, our parents did not have the money to keep the cabonets stocked with food, let alone candy. i think kids today are lazy they don't have to walk around asking for candy. there is plenty of candy at home!!
Well... despite the rain and cold, my 6 year old granddaughter knocked on EVERY door that had their lights on in our neighborhood. She was one very determined trick-or-treater.
DeleteIt seems to be turning around. Last year we only had twelve all night, it isn't even 7pm and we have had close to forty already. I attribute it to new young families moving into the neighborhood. We seniors are begining to downsize.

DeleteIn the past few years we've had 20-30. Right now (7:00 p.m.) we've had five. But it rained all day and continues to drizzle. We're hoping for another 20 or so. Like to see the little cuties. I normally don't eat candy, but can be tempted by a dry martini most any time.
ReplyDeleteThis caution by the parents is a bit insulting to us good guys. I thought all that parental scaredy-cat stuff about so-called razors in the apples crested twenty years ago. I had very few visitors this year. I think I'll reevaluate whether to even bother from now on. It's not as though Halloween does anything for me. Goodbye Trick or Treaters . Go jump in the lake. ReplyDeleteOur neighborhood is pretty good - low maintenance and safe. ...and so I can go out with the family and friends rather than staying home and handing out candy, we've done the 'honor system' the last two years by leaving the candy in a big bowl outside near our Halloween displays and it's worked well. Oh - and I like Three Musketeers!
