When I looked out the window on Wednesday, I was surprised to see frost all over the car.
It had been a long time since we'd had to scrape frost off a car.
We were happy to do the job before taking our granddaughter, KC to school.
Meanwhile Tiffany got ready for her training run. I took these photos from the window inside the warm house. Tif hopped around to keep warm while the GPS on her watch took time to lock onto a signal. And then she was off! It really made me realize just how much she was her father's daughter.
With KC at school and Tiffany finished with her run and a shower, we headed out to Costco to pick up my new glasses that had just come in.
I opted for trifocal instead of the progressive this time because I just couldn't find the middle sweet spot so I could see things an arm's length away.
When I was at the Hawaii Costco about two years ago, the optician said the glasses I chose were too large for my face, but didn't explain why. I wanted large frames to screen out more of the sun's UV rays so that's what I got.
I did choose frames that were large again, but this time the Chicago optician explained that they take a measurement of my head and those two numbers at the end list the size of the appropriate frame. I was measured a 51. The frame I'd looked at was a too large 55. The frame I chose in Hawaii was 53.
The optician explained that having the wrong frame size would make it more difficult to see things effectively.
I wonder why they don't just measure you to start off with and then have you select the glasses that are the right size.
Whatever the case, I now have the right size frames and I'm trying to get used to using glasses again.
I have to say it was all an eye opening experience.
Oh Kay it's too early in the morning. "An eye opening experience"...good one. Visit me any time and scrape frost to your hearts content.

ReplyDeleteI have used progressives for so long now they are completely invisible to me. I'm quite nearsighted and my frame size is a 48! :-)
ReplyDeleteArt really likes his progressives. He's convinced I couldn't get used to mine because it was the wrong sized glasses I got from the Hawaii Costco.

ReplyDeleteWhy does a runner "lock on" to a GPS something? Does this make folks at home able to find the runner if needed, or does it help the runner track the miles traveled?
Uh, my regional optical shop chain usually measures my face and nose bridge and pupil location within my eyes first. Then they order the correct size of frame after I choose the frame I want. I like the lines too instead of progressive lenses. My middle and lower section is intentionally wider within the lens instead of just by the nose bridge. Then the middle section is a bit "taller" to see computers easier. After cataract surgery in both eyes, I just really need the reading lens, but figured I'd keep full glasses. (If you're really nearsighted, there's an increased risk for cataracts sooner. Had them done around 55 years old, and had to choose internal lenses that would still require glasses for either reading vision or distance.)
My son and I both have glasses with the magnetic spot on the nose bridge of the glasses to add the sunglasses overlay. They cost more, but are really practical. Still cheaper and easier than a separate set of prescription sunglasses.

It's so funny that you said Jack Frost was waiting for you. I had to think because actually we DO have a friend named Jack Frost and I'm sure he was kidded about his name a lot.

I'm still not used to these glasses either. I must have a stubborn brain.
First I am hearing of tri focals! Will have to look into that!

ReplyDeleteThe last time I got stylish little rectangles. I believe they are too small for my progressive lenses to be effective. But, for the price, I'll be wearing them for a while.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was so annoyed with my little square glasses that this time I went for larger. After reading this post, looked at all my frames. No numbers like yours anywhere on my regular frames, and everything has been worn off my computer glasses. It sure is nice to have the feel of seeing all around me again.

My dispensing optician always does all these measurements with each frame I pick up and try on. When glasses started getting small after all those years of large lenses, I often picked a frame that the optician would say "no" to. I am not going back to anything larger than what I have now. I've seen photos of me in those large frames and I look ridiculous. The smaller lenses work so much better on my small face and short hair.

I have worn glasses since my early 20s and I have never heard of frame sizes ????? Maybe I'll ask next time I get new glasses.

Tiffany is in amazing shape. I wish I was a runner, but I could never do it, even when I was young.
I get my contacts from Costco along with my eye exam. Best place I've ever gone. Went to a small office 2 years ago and they didn't even figure out how to use my vision insurance. Never doing that again.
ReplyDeleteI get on well with varifocals, but Christopher couldn't manage them at all and went back to bifocals. I got new frames recently. I loved the old frames but they were never really comfortable and as I have to wear them all the time they need to be comfortable. It must be a novelty for you to have ice on the car; lucky you to have been able to escape it and go back to Hawaii. We keep our car in the garage now when we're not using it as the weather is so cold.
ReplyDeleteI have a big face, so I got a pair of men's glasses, and they are the best I have ever had. They are progressive lenses, and it took me five minutes to get used to them. The bigger lens size definitely makes a difference.
