I'd been thinking about cutting my hair for a long time now. As it grew longer, it was even more unmanageable in the humidity. I looked around at my Tai chi and Zumba classes for women whose haircuts I thought were done well. Then I asked where they went and how much it cost. I was shocked to find that nice haircuts were going for between $50- $60.
I've always maintained my haircuts by myself, but this time it would be a drastic cut and I didn't trust myself to do it on my own.
Eventually, I decided on the Premier Salon at Macy's. Their haircuts go for about $31.50. With styling it's about $48.00.
When I met Luciano, well.... I was a little surprised. I'd never had a guy do my hair before. On top of that, he was movie star gorgeous!
"You have pretty hair," he was kind enough to say.
I showed him a photo of myself with the shorter cut from a year or two ago and he looked at it very carefully.
"Can I ask why you want to do this?" I had the feeling he wanted to dissuade me from cutting it all off.
After washing my hair, he started to snip and I have to confess I was a little nervous.
Luciano put me at ease. He told me he was originally from Brazil and how he was enjoying living in Hawaii.
It was so easy talking to him.
He really worked a long time on my hair giving me advice as he styled it.
I told him I needed a cut where I didn't have to do anything with it because I am extraordinarily lazy about my hair in the morning.
Still, he showed me how to blow dry my hair in the opposite direction that my hair roots were leaning to give it a fuller look.
When it was over, I was happy and relieved with the result. He gave me a hug as I was leaving and I had the feeling I might just be back for a touch-up. Yes, I could do it on my own, but let's face it. He does a much better job than I ever could.
If you go to see Luciano, do tell him Kay with the blog sent you and that I said, "Obrigado." (Portuguese for "thank you")

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely haircut; I think shorter hair looks more flattering on us as we reach a 'certain age'. Mind you, I've had mine short for years and years, like you I'm really lazy and it's so much easier to maintain. I wouldn't be brave enough to cut it myself though; I have someone who comes to the house, which is great as I hate going to salons, and she charges me about £20 ($32) which is really good value.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem with short haircuts (which I have) is how often they need to be cut. If I stray even a day past six weeks, I cannot do anything with my hair! You look great in your new short "do." :-)

ReplyDeleteOh yes! It does feel great. I was losing a lot of hair... AM losing a lot of hair lately and losing long hair freaked me out more. Now that it's shorter, I don't quite notice it as much.

DeleteLove the haircut, love your hairdresser. I have had male hairdressers and they always do a super job. For the past 13 years, though, because of the color, I have had women hairdressers. The one I have now is a "red" specialist and very young. I am hopeful she won't retire as my previous two (also color specialists) did.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that the costs are about the same as here. I do know that SF haircuts run around $65 and color up to $200 so I thought Hawaii would be similar to SF. Haircuts at the salon I frequent are $45. My hairdresser grandfathered my old rate with my previous hairdresser ($100 for cut & color) but I have a hunch that may be increasing soon as it's been a year since that change over occurred.

ReplyDeleteWomen do pay more for their haircuts. I think I payed maybe 12 for the one time I went when Daisy asked me to go. I can't cut my own hair on my own though, I usually get the most I can and ask my mom to get the spots I missed.
ReplyDeleteKay, I like it! It looks really nice. I have never been able to cut my own hair. I have always spent a fortune cutting mine. I've always been so picky about how it was cut. Curly hair needs to be cut by someone with training in cutting the curls. I've been going through a medical condition where I have lost great amounts of hair. It is very frustrating. Now, I am looking for someone who can do anything to make it look presentable. I envy your think hair.

DeleteThanks, Sally! I liked the look of the longer hair. I always wore my hair that way until about 15 years ago. However, my hair no longer cooperates like it used to. For some reason my hair is now curlier and has a mind of its own. I am also losing tons of hair and it was unnerving me to see it fall out every day.
DeleteI like your shorter haircut. I noticed you were growing it out and now you've gone back to short and easy. I love my short do. In fact I am due for a trim tomorrow. I go every five weeks, and pay $30 in a little old beauty shop in the old part of our suburban town. A lot of fellow teachers and retired teachers are customers there.
