We met our friends, Calvin and Kay and Calvin "Cal" and Myra at Tai chi a couple of years ago. We thought it was rather humorous that there are two Calvins and two Kays. Cal suggested our going to a new seafood restaurant called Cajun King in Waimalu Shopping Center (on the island of Oahu). He and Myra had gone there for their anniversary and enjoyed the experience.
It was rather pricey, but since we asked for separate checks, I felt free to splurge a little. It's true that Art was surprised to see me order the $25 Alaskan King crab legs and a $12 plate of green beans but I figured it wasn't something I did often and wanted to try ordering what appealed to me.
Unfortunately I ordered the butter and garlic crab legs. It was a large serving that arrived in a big plastic bag full of butter and garlic. I've never experienced that before. It was extremely messy and somewhat difficult to eat when you're wearing plastic gloves, even with all the different crab cutting instruments they give you to use. Still... it was tasty and I needed the green beans to balance out the richness of the buttery crab. I really loved those crispy green beans.
Art's Cajun lobster and shrimp with fried rice looked good. However, he said his lobster had very little lobster meat. I had a couple of his shrimps and it was very good.
The best part of the meal was being with such lovely friends. It was great fun chatting, and we even made a tentative decision to take a trip together in summer of 2015. It will take quite a bit of planning. We haven't even decided whether to go to the west or east coast, but we would like to see Canada again so that's a possibility. It's fun to think about.

ReplyDeleteWe have one place around here that served King Crab legs. It is on Tuesday night and it is all you can eat for $29.95. That includes salad and two vegetables. We all take our own favorite cracking utensils because the ones they give us are not the best. I researched ordering King Crab legs from Alaska one time and found they were $24 per pound but shipping was $42.00!!!

ReplyDeleteWe are looking forward to our annual trip to San Francisco. We will eat crab, which we get cracked and dip in butter. Probably not what you'd order on your first date, but when among friends it's perfectly fine to be a little messy.
I love fresh Dungeness crab that is local here, a winter time treat, but I don't want to eat it in restaurants. We buy it at the grocery store when it's on sale, cover the table with newspaper, make lemon butter for dipping, some salad and bread and white wine, and go at it. We use had towels for napkins, and get up to wash hands occasionally during the meal.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you had to work to get your food! I love seafood, and could eat tons of those green beans. I've been getting a box of them "to go" from my neighborhood Chinese restaurant, and can healthily munch on them for 2-3 days.
ReplyDeleteOK - if you don't get to see the Cardiologist until January, whatever is, or is not happening, it can't be too bad or they would speed Art to another test or procedure. Wish you could get in sooner just to ease the nerves, and/or maybe permit Art to run again. Be ready to take notes at the appointment and take your list of questions so all concerns are cleared.

Thanks, DrumMajor! I'm not thrilled about all the pills Art is now having to take. He went from nothing to four different kinds. I think they're trying out the pills to see what effect it will have on his arrhythmia. They're waiting until January to give them time to work. And oh yes, we'll have our list of questions for sure. :-)
DeleteI've always thought the best part of any meal is the company, and how lovely that you enjoy them enough to think of planning a vacation together. Your meal sounded delicious, I haven't had King Crab's legs in a long time.

The plastic bag was a shock for me too. Well... Those are the American portion sizes. :-)
