I've seen older ladies walking around town holding umbrellas on a sunny day. I know it makes sense because the sun can be very harsh in Hawaii.
Despite the fact that I am a senior citizen, I just couldn't see myself walking around holding an umbrella. It looks a little funny on a sunny day. I walk to my zumba classes in the sun trying to find as many sheltering trees as I can. However, I always carry an umbrella in my zumba bag in case of rain.
Today, the sun was blazing without a cloud in the sky and I was blazing from a vigorous workout.
When I reached into my bag to find my hat, I saw the umbrella and decided to use it. Who cares how I look?
And you know what?
It was great! Really great! No wonder those ladies long ago used parasols on sunny days. It didn't just protect their complexion, it must have protected their eyes from UVs too.
I think I'll go look for a nicer umbrella to use now. It might make me look older to use the umbrella, but perhaps I'll look more stylish old.

When we were in China there were a lot of ladies using umbrellas to keep out of the sun. I've NEVER seen one around here.

ReplyDeleteThey used to make little umbrellas that sat on your head like a beanie with the propeller on the top. A hand-held one certainly is classier. Of course, a light-colored one will repeal the sun the best.

I've seen those little umbrellas that sit on your head, but never got the nerve to wear one. My kids would have crawled under a rug with embarrassment.

I don't understand it: I moved to the desert and here I am the only one in Meitar wearing a hat. (Well, I'm probably the only adult without a car, maybe that's why.) But I won't go out without sunblock and a hat, surgeon's orders.
Do Hawaiians wear hats?
I'll post a photo once I find a really, really, really cute umbrella. It's weird that I always wear a hat when I'm on trips, but rarely at home in Hawaii. I've just put a sun hat in the backseat so I can wear it when we're out. Not many people in Hawaii wear a sunhat. It's mostly the tourists.

ReplyDeleteIt's a parasol I think on a sunny day --and an umbrella on a cloudy day!!!!! BUT--they certainly can be interchanged!!!! Another word for umbrella is bumbershoot (slang --using the words, umbrella and parachute together)... Heard that one????? ha

ReplyDeleteThat's an excellent idea, you know, even for here in the Maritimes and the 2-3 months of the year one would really need it. I saw some beautiful umbrellas a few years ago; now I have a valid excuse to buy one.
ReplyDeleteWe were in Nova Scotia and PEI and loved it. You sure do live in a beautiful area. We learned about dulse and brought it for my brother who fell on love with it.
DeleteOur summer vacation takes place in the Swiss Alps almost every year. We love hiking in the mountains, in the canton of Valais. The scenery is breathtaking! We hike in an altitude of 2000 - 3000 m. Usually there are cloudless skies and hardly any trees to provide shelter from the sun. I often think that an umbrella would be very helpful, but it's impossible to take one on such a hiking tour. It would only get in the way. So we resort to wearing wide-brimmed hats and big sunglasses instead and put on lots of sunscreen. I'm sure you look great and stylish with an umbrella! :)

ReplyDeleteI never forget to apply sunscreen on my face, neck and arms, occasionally will wear a sun hat and often use an umbrella if I know I'm going to be walking around a bit. (my skin is very sun damaged, a bit too late to worry but I don't want to end up with dollar coin sized sun spots when I get older) The umbrella provides so much shade that I do feel cooler, not just sun protected. I wish they made umbrellas for sunshade so it would be fashionable to use lol...Hope you are OK...thinking of you.

I'm finally putting a sun hat in the back seat so I always have it available. My skin is getting sun damaged since returning to Hawaii. I just had a growth cut out of my face. I'll be doing a post about it, of course. :-)
DeleteParasols are still sold in China, which makes me think they would still be sold in Japan, and, extrapolating from there, they ought to be available in Hawaii. No?
ReplyDeleteI am extremely sensitive to the sun, due to a misspent sun-bathing youth combined with oral medications in my old age, so I don't worry about being the only one with an umbrella. True, I don't use a black umbrella, but even that would be better than nothing, for my skin, but roasting hot to sit under. LOL

ReplyDeleteI have used an umbrella for the sun, but it was quite a while ago. It was at a soccer tournament that Jake was in and I had to sit/stand for hours in an open field on a hot day. It saved me. I absolutely approve of sunbrellas.

DeleteGood for you. I inherited a Japanese paper parasol from my grandmother years ago and it has had so much use. It's been to many school sports days, it's been out and about in many UK towns, villages and cities, it's been to the South of France and to St Lucia. I certainly don't care whether I look a bit daft, I'm saving my skin.
ReplyDeleteMy dad always called his umbrella a "bumbershoot" to validate what Betsy Adams said. Also, I actually own the little beanie hat umbrellas that we use for fishing. You can sit in the boat with an umbrella on your head and still hold and manage all your fishing gear. Only ours do not have propellers on the top like the ones Drum Major has seen.

ReplyDeleteWell, I don't care that much about how I look in public (I live in Hilo, after all!) but feel hassled carrying an umbrella. So I'll just avoid the sun as much as possible, the way I always do. Not so bad here, as you know.
