I joined our weekly Zumba friends luncheon and learned from several others that they had also gotten that supposed call from Microsoft by someone with an Indian accent telling them that something was wrong with their computers.
Then I got a comment on Friday's post from theimarket saying:
I checked Callercenter.com and sure enough the number we got was listed. Then I googled the same number and got all kinds of information with a whole lot of people who did do as the caller directed them which produced a lot of error messages on their computer.
I thought this information was very helpful!
Then I saw several website notices for that same number with a FACEBOOK webpage that looked like this! Puh-leeease! A computer doctor? What they'll give you is more likely a virus!
They say their office is in the UK and they purport to be able to fix your computer.
It's a scary world out there to think that a long poisonous arm from way across the ocean can come in and snaggle our computers if we're not careful.
As you and Art and everybody else has told me, let the answering machine take the message if we don't recognize the name on our caller ID. Sheesh!

"Got a call like that from a 202 phone number. The scammer tried to make it sound like it's urgent and important for him to fix the problem. But I knew what he was up to and I hung up. I also reported the phone number to Callercenter.com to warn others."

Thank you for sharing this extra information that you found. It is really a scary world out there. We must be extra careful nowadays.
ReplyDeleteits so sad our world has come to this, we must be so lack of trust but it has, thanks for the info, we have had a few calls here in Canada, I need to let the answer machine pick up, thats a lesson I must learn,

ReplyDeleteMy daughter's computer and laptop were acting really badly, and she brought them up to G yesterday. The laptop isn't salvagable, but we will take it to an expert to see if her fire code books can be salvaged from the HD. The computer had 4224 pieces of malware on it. "Slightly infected," G says. Once he removed all the malware, the computer wouldn''t go online so something important was removed too. What a mess this is.
ReplyDeleteGrrrr. Makes me so angry. Much of it coming from overseas too. Then Russia. If they spent half as much time trying to improve their own lives, think of the successes they could have.

ReplyDeleteHi Kay! I got twice such a telephone call by someone with an accent from a person from India. I said that was surrounded by computerfreaks who know my computer better than anybody else, because my daughter's partner built my computer himself..

I would say nine out of ten calls on my landline are from sources I don't know. As Art suggests, I don't answer the phone. They never leave a message. I've googled many a number and they usually have been reported as scammers. My problem is that My cellphone is no fun to chat on. It's okay for quick calls and, more importantly, for text messaging which is what it's all coming down to anyway. Pretty soon you'll be able to text your granddaughter, I predict.

ReplyDeleteThey are looking for people with online banking hoping that they can get into their accounts. They also want a fee to fix your computer. I've had lots. now if there's a number I don't recognize on the phone I don't answer .
ReplyDeleteOh yes. I got the call. Usually I don't answer unidentified callers, but wanted to answer just in case in was important, since my answering machine isn't working. I just told the caller I didn't have time to talk and hung up.
ReplyDeleteAs I said, I just don't ever answer our phone anymore --unless I recognize the call... IF someone really wants to talk to me, they will leave a voicemail and a phone number.... We don't use our 'home' phone for personal calls. We have changed all friends/family to our cellphone --so 99.9% of the calls which come in on the house phone are 'junk' calls... Seems like Somebody would STOP some of this..... GADS!
