We've had a rather uncomfortable summer of humidity, heat and a few downpours. One morning mom called us to see what had suddenly sprouted from the garden. She says she didn't see it the day before. Can mushrooms grow that fast?
We love mushrooms, but would never eat a wild one because we don't know enough to be able to distinguish edible from poisonous.

Yes, they do grow that fast, amazingly. And I too never eat wild mushrooms, but these look benign to my eye. Probably poisonous, then. :-)

ReplyDeleteI've seen them pop up overnight. I try to remove them immediately. We humans might be wise about them, but I fear for the dogs. :o

ReplyDeleteI love the look of wild mushrooms. We used to be able to buy huge field mushrooms from the grocer when I was young, they were as big as a small plate. I didn't see any of these on my last trip back. These days the biggest ones I buy are portobello.

ReplyDeleteI always wanted to eat wild mushrooms but wouldn't trust any expert on them...unless it's like the Japanese ones such as the very expensive Matsutake or Mattake becuz it's very distinctive. I was looking thru a wild 'room book and the non poisonous look like their poisonous counterpart.

We did have some Matsutake mushrooms when we were in Hiroshima several years ago visiting Art's relatives. The mushrooms grew in their forest behind their house. Unfortunately there weren't much because the animals had eaten them. I don't remember if I could tell they were extra special, flavor wise.

ReplyDeleteI would never eat them even as good as they look. I have some growing in my flowerpot and I just pull them up by the roots and toss them in the trash.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely can pop up overnight. We have chanterelles all over the yard, new ones after every rain. Lots of people eat them here and I went so far as to pick and wash a batch but chickened out when it came time to cook them!
ReplyDeleteI do know plenty of people who forage for mushrooms--my mother was one of them--and I am still alive. Wouldn't trust myself though.
ReplyDeleteWe have a mycologist (a mushroom expert) living in Hilo who is well known in his field. If I ever find interesting mushrooms I'll take them to him for identification. He could probably tell from the pic whether those mushrooms are OK.
