Myrtle's Helpful Hints

My good friend, Myrtle sent me these helpful hints.

In order to clean broken glass you can avoid getting cut by the sharp shards by using a piece of bread to pick up the tiny bits of glass.

Although we haven't had too much of a problem with dishwasher scum, this is supposed to be a way to get rid of it.

You first clear the dishwasher of dishes and sprinkle baking soda on the bottom.  Then place a cup of vinegar on the top shelf.  Run the dishwasher at maximum heat and let the vinegar and baking soda dissolve the scale, scum and whatever else has attached itself to your dishwasher.

  1. I hope I don't have to try the bread thing any time soon, but the dishwasher cleaning trick I will definitely use! Thanks, Kay. :-)

  2. There's a commercial product that does a better job. We do wipe the door and the gasket down with vinegar, and we use a diswasher soap with some of the antibuildup stuff in it. Can I remember the name....Noooooooo. LOL We have so little water here that we try to use the dishwasher as little as possible.

  5. Good idea for cleaning the dishwasher. I had a repairman come out to fix a lower fan in the unit and since it required no actual work, he cleaned the bottom for me and found lots of stuff in it. AND I am very good about cleaning my plates before putting them into the rack.

  7. There are many very simple remedies for things that cause us trouble. I've used the vinegar and baking soda. I've also tried margarine.

  8. I'm offering this helpful hint free of charge! If your glasses keep slipping down your nose, wind dental floss around the hinge. It sticks and tightens the glasses without making them uncomfortable. You can easily replace it if it gets dirty and ratty.

  11. I will try the bread trick but my dishwasher is never used. I am sure the hoses are no longer good. That device is kind of a case of over kill for one person.
