We saw an article in the paper recently about how airlines are going to soon shrink the size of what they will allow as carry-ons. They do already often ask people at the gate to check in their carry-ons for free.
Well... I'm not thrilled about letting them do that since Hawaiian lost our luggage (with all our chargers, night clothes, etc.) going to Vegas a couple of years ago. It somehow ended up in Texas with American Airlines. I still can't figure out how they managed to do that. We didn't get our carry-on back until the week after we returned to Hawaii.
That incident made me decide to get a smaller carry-on. I still wanted roller carry-ons because I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I looked in our attic and realized that I should donate or give away the carry-ons that we no longer use.
#1 was a rather expensive retirement gift that Art received from his buddies at work. We bought #2 because we wanted a smaller luggage. When we brought it home we discovered it was actually the same size. Why didn't we return it? I don't know. Whatever the case, we used them both only a handful of times. #3 is a two wheeler that was given to us by our daughter and it was used quite a bit until the airlines made the aisles narrower so the bag could no longer be rolled once you entered the plane. #4 was bought in Vegas when Hawaiian Airlines lost our carry-on.
We looked everywhere for an even smaller luggage and found #5 at Ross. It's probably about the size of a backpack.
It was very, very difficult to find a smaller carry-on, but I'm thinking they'll start going on the market once the airlines change their rules again. Do you bring carry-ons when you travel?

I RARELY check any luggage! For any trip of a week or less (the vast majority of our travels) I can get everything I need into a carry-on. We'll see going forward.
ReplyDeleteWhen I travel these days, it's with a carry-on only. I just recently bought a smaller one for those times I might need it. I'll be traveling to Florida in November this fall with just a small bag. :-)
ReplyDeleteI always use a carry-on, too. I think they are perfect for traveling on a plane. I can't believe they are gonna change the sizes again though :( They are already so small and it's sometimes hard to stay in their weight limits. I wish they could just leave it at what it is!

I use a backpack as my carry-on.
ReplyDeleteThose are all big to me. I consider a carryon to be more of a tote. Drives me crazy when the people ahead of me have these massive "carryons" that should have been checked and they are trying to heft them into the overhead compartments. Or, then you are seated, and here is someone maneuvering a giant "carryon" into the bin right above your head. Sheesh.

I have one about half the size of 5, and I use it with my check on #1. LOL For short trips I take only the 1/2 5. I paid real money for the Samsonate #1, and it has lasted 30 years. :)

ReplyDeleteI have one identical to your #3 but I have always considered it a check-in size. My carry-on is an overnight bag. I understand the fear of losing a bag, but I don't want a lot of stuff to carry around.
ReplyDeleteI have a duffle type leopard fabric bag that has wheels for my carryon that I put essentials (make up, extra set of clothes, etc.) and plane comfort items in. It can squish to fit under the seat and I can also use it as a foot rest when I am on the plane.
ReplyDeleteNow that I am older and hardly travel, flying in a section with more leg room and wider seats are important. Sometimes the only option is first class, and sometimes that turns out to be a pretty good deal using a combination of miles and dollars, considering the length of the flight and the perks.
I love the small carry-ons we bought at IKEA, and with the method of packing clothes you published here once, I can get everything I need into one case and a backpack.

ReplyDeleteI'm using a gym bag smaller than any of those (no wheels though) and packed LIGHT for two weeks; Keeping my charger, ID, and necessaries on my cross body hand bag. Pockets help too....

We always check our luggage and use a backpack for a carry on for cords and chargers and prescriptions and jewelry and and what we need on the plane. I usually either take my laptop or my big camera plus a purse as my carry on.
