We'd gone to the Navy Exchange for an early morning breakfast after I'd gotten my fasting blood test over with at Tripler Hospital.
While Art left to go to the bathroom, this bird suddenly hopped onto the back of Art's chair.
That really startled me. He then jumped onto the table and got too close to my food so I shooed him away with my hand.
He jumped a few inches away and hopped back again.
Shooing with my hand wouldn't work. I had to use the plastic cover to push him away.
I didn't want to feed him because I thought that would just cause a problem for future diners who chose to eat on the patio.
When Art returned, the sparrow changed seats and sat next to me.
Totally unafraid of either Art or me he hopped closer and closer while Art started taking photos with my iPhone.
And then... suddenly the sparrow jumped over and actually got hold of my half eaten hash brown and tried to fly away with it.
You often hear the saying that the early bird catches the worm, but really... isn't this ridiculous?

That is really bizarre! I have never heard of birds being that brazen. I wonder if it was REALLY hungry. :-)

ReplyDeleteI've watched sparrows on the ground, maneuvering between feet to eat scraps, but wow! On the other hand, a whole half a hash brown to himself! Bonanza.

ReplyDeleteThis happened to me on a trip to Scotland with a group of students. The bus let us off for a lunch stop and blackbirds kept stealing the kids' bread right off their plates.

My guess is that bird is quite used to being given handouts. Previous diners were not as considerate as you are, Kay!

ReplyDeleteWe encountered this problem many times while in Aruba a few years ago. The birds were intent on stealing sugar from the sugar bowls.

sparrow are very popular in Poland
ReplyDeleteSomeone has been feeding that bird for it to be so bold with you. Those sparrows are not a favorite here.
ReplyDeleteThese characters are bold as brass. This happened to me once in my life and that was in Mauii at a seaside restaurant.

ReplyDeleteI have seen this many times in warm climate settings at outdoor restaurants. They can be very bold and you should be happy it was a small sparrow and not a big sea gull!

ReplyDeleteThink that little beggar has done this for a while and enjoys the easy food. Might not be sanitary but it is still adorable and I would have probably hand fed him.
