Night Blooming Cereus

Art likes to go for a brisk walk before the hot Hawaiian sun rises over the Koolau Mountain range.


One morning he sent these photos via text message of some Night Blooming Cereus on a neighbor's fence. I was not quite awake yet when he sent it but found it after I got out of bed.

I was amazed and considered going with him next time to see it.

    What a nice treat for the early morning exerciser. The picture is nice too, though, so I think you can be happy with that.

    Lucky Art. I had a neighbor in the Keys that had one and never once caught it in flower.

    Interesting flower. My dad was given one many years ago. I wonder what happened to it when they moved to their retirement community? Can't ask they are both gone now.

    I Googled this plant because I wanted to see what the actual plant looks like. That's hard to find since everyone photographs those incredible flowers - at night! I did discover that it is a kind of cactus.

    Kay, isn't this related to that wonderful fuschia desert cactus that your Aunt gave your mom? Except that one was a day blooming cereus.
    Whenever I see them, it reminds me of an incident back when I was a flight attendant. An elderly woman on the plane told me about the wall of night blooming cereus that are in the front and side of Punahou School. She and her son would walk along the way especially in September because the cereus would all bloom at the same time in the early evening and put on quite a show for them, just for a brief couple of days. Very sadly, her son passed away and she moved away, but she would come back to Honolulu in September each year, to see the flowers bloom again.
    Such bittersweet memories. Her story would always pop into my head whenever I saw the beautiful flowers.

    Hey Kay!
    Just come to Georgia and I will let you see my night blooming cereus cactus!! Come in August, that is when ours usually blooms!! We sometimes miss it though, as you know, it only blooms at night!!!
