People in Hawaii are nervous now with the outbreak of Dengue Fever. So far, it's been localized to the Big Island although we did have one case of it on Oahu. The Oahu case was someone who contracted it during a trip to Southeast Asia. That person's strain is different from the one that is worrying all Big Islanders.
The number of people getting Dengue Fever climbs every day. There is no vaccine for this mosquito borne disease.
Mosquito repellents are flying off the shelves on the Big Island.
The evening news reported that a new mosquito deterrent has been found.
I'm sure many people know that Avon's Skin-So-Soft works well. Art took it to Africa with him when he visited our son, Keola while he was serving in the Peace Corps. They traveled from West Africa to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro together.
Now the news is that Victoria Secret's Bombshell perfume works well too.
The problem is that it's not cheap. This small bottle is about $25.
The Avon products are more than half the price and have already been used by a lot of people.
I've read other articles by technicians who tested Bombshell who said you would have to liberally douse yourself with the perfume for it to be effective.
Hmmmm....
I'm thinking Art might not appreciate smelling like a flower when he goes outside.

Kay, We've been having dengue scares here too in Mumbai, and one of the things people are doing is drinking Papaya leaf juice. The lady who comes to work as my household help here in Mumbai (she's been coming for 25 years, tried this for her son, who started getting the fevers and symptoms. They say even if dengue is confirmed, this papaya leaf juice reduces the side effects, keeps the platelets count up, and in general works.
ReplyDeleteI just remembered you guys have a papaya tree in your garden ! :-)
No kidding? Unfortunately we had to cut our tree down a while ago because it got too tall. However, our neighbor does have a tree. This is very interesting. I shall keep this in mind if/when the disease shows up on our island.
DeleteSome folks here have also tried introducing guppy fish in water bodies (that might breed dengue mosquitoes) . With decent suceess. http://vaccinenewsdaily.com/stories/510535225-guppy-fish-could-be-used-to-fight-dengue-fever
DeleteMaybe this can be tried ....
Wow, scary stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis is scary, all right. I do hope they figure out why suddenly it's become a problem. And I used to use Avon's Skin So Soft as a repellent, and it does work. :-)
ReplyDeleteI so hope you are feeling better. Yup, keep Art's skin soft.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who came back from China a over month ago. She's been very ill then slowed down ever since. A month of nonspecified illness is too much from my viewpoint. I strongly urged her to go to the doctor thinking there is more than just a cold hanging in there causing the slowness.
ReplyDeleteI have an appointment tomorrow with my nurse practitioner. I guess I wasn't too worried because several friends mentioned having the same thing happen after returning from a trip. I think we were all worn out.
DeleteOh I know I've been reading about this! My niece in volcano is preg with twins! Stay well, you folks

I had not heard about this. Some strange things going on with crazy weather and concerning outbreaks of disease.
ReplyDeleteMosquitos are some little buggers. Dengue fever there; West Nile virus here. Take care.
ReplyDeletefirst I've heard of it
ReplyDeletealways something to worry about health wise...
ReplyDeletewow, thats scary for sure, take care,,
ReplyDeleteI don't use any mosquito repellants but then our mosquitoes are the good kind and don't pass on nasty diseases. Skin so soft sounds like the way to go. Also, eat lots of tomatoes! True. This works. It does take a while to build up in your system.
ReplyDeleteThis is very scary Kay, haven't heard about this.
ReplyDeleteSo far our mosquitoes only cause itchy welts. Good thing, as they love me. I've never tired Skin so soft. I use OFF, but as sparingly as I can get away with. Fortunately our hard freeze has taken care of the mosquitoes for now.
ReplyDeleteThis is a worry for sure. Stay safe.
Skin so soft is a good repellent and smells good. Dr. Schulz of American Botanical (herbdoc.com) has a nice spray called Bug Barrier.
ReplyDeleteI first heard about Dengue fever from John Grisham's book, The Testament. The attorney who had to find the beneficiary of a strange rich old man traveled to Africa and while there contracted the disease. It is a very painful terrible disease that I never want to "meet".
Hopefully everyone starts looking through their yards and emptying out standing water so mosquito larvae don't have a chance.
We live on the Big Island. So far there have been no cases where we live. I'm glad for the tip about SkinSoSoft, because the smell of Off nauseates me. A friend of ours, a nurse practitioner, says there are four different strains of dengue, carried by two different kinds of mosquitoes.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can buy it on Amazon:

Victoria's Secret Bombshell?? Imagine trying to get it past airport security. "What you got in that bottle?" "Oh, it's just Bombshell."
