It has been confounding us that we couldn't find the source of all the little "flour bugs". Everybody calls it by a different name. I've heard them called pineapple bugs, flour bugs, tobacco or cigarette bugs. Art searched everywhere in the kitchen to see where they might be eating, living and breeding since they've been flying all around the house. I searched through all the cupboards, but couldn't find them.
Then I wondered if they might be in the drawer where mom keeps her seaweed, macaroni, and bean threads and Art keeps his soba and somen noodles.
Sure enough! There they were having a banquet in the soba noodles. Art had gotten the noodles from a friend a while ago and we hadn't gotten around to eating it yet.
They'd also migrated into other noodle territory and were having a grand time.
Still... why would they go into the furniture where we found the other poop? I'm thinking that might have been some other wood eating bug. I guess we'll have to keep our poop patrol going until we know we're safe again.

ReplyDeleteI wondered what flour beetles look like, are they reddish brown, tiny, the size of a grain of rice, maybe smaller, I always wondered this,, I hope you have managed to get them all out, nasty things aren't they,,

ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I am happy to live in a four seasons climate. I remember all the bugs when I lived in the tropics. I could never keep food out anywhere and kept my flour in the freezer. The "German cockroaches" were the worst. Now, because we keep a compost bin, and if the lid is not set tight we do get fruit flies.

ReplyDeleteSo far, I have not had any bugs.For one thing, I have Missy, my cat, and she loves bugs. When she finds one...or even a spider...she eats it.

ReplyDeleteYears ago, having lived in Florida and Hawaii, Iearned to store EVERYthing in containers. Snap ware is my favorite brand and available on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether to say that was a good find or not. At least now you can start to do something about it. They can be tough to get rid of.
ReplyDeleteIn order to rid out house of flour weevils (the larvae hatch into those little brown moths with powdery brown wings) all flour and flour based products had to go into glass with sealed lids. And the oatmeal, and the cornmeal, etc. It's been years now with no reoccurance, but then no smorgasbord awaits.

ReplyDeleteFor the past 2 months, we have had problems with weevils. They got into our rice dispenser, flour, noodles,etc. At first we were so lame.....we through out the rice, washed the rice dispenser thoroughly, then put in a new batch of 20 lb rice into the dispenser. A week later, we found weevils in our new rice. After we researched weevils, we found that they hatch about 200 weevils at a time. We had to dispose of our 2nd bag of rice.
ReplyDeleteIt's taken us 2 months to get rid of the weevils. We did it by constanting vacuuming up every weevil we saw. The vacuum must have been turned on at least 60 times during the day.
We no longer use our rice dispenser and bought an air tight container to hold our rice.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that we won't see another weevil in 2016.

I'm looking for a tight container right now, as a matter of fact. I haven't seen any of those flour bugs lately though. Roaches?... That's something else I'm fighting.
