My daughter sent the following ad that came out to advertise the 4th of July sales at the shopping center and asked me what I thought.

It's a cute design...
But... you could be sitting on a modified American flag which some people might consider offensive. An upside down flag could also signify distress. Perhaps it's to indicate distress at the state of our administration right now. Or maybe just distress that the sales weren't as good after all.
Or it's much ado about nothing.
I don't know. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI remember reading years ago that tourists should avoid such clothing in foreign countries because it made one a target.
ReplyDeleteI have seen people wearing flag themed items of clothing and very few actually pull it off -- not that I belong to the fashion police but sometimes I do just have to look away.
I believe it is a national distress sign. I am so ashamed of our government right now...especially out childish president.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if "youngsters" even know that an upside down flag expresses our country in distress. I remember the days when you weren't supposed to "wear" the flag. I think the designer should have placed the star field at top or to sides if just being "fashionable." The wearer should learn it's other meanings though. Interesting info about not wearing U.S. emblems in foreign countries; seems obvious these days, but hadn't thought about it.

I showed my young nephew the photo of the shirt this evening and he did know what the upside flag meant. I was surprised. He didn't like the shirt either and pretty much said what you just did.

ReplyDeleteOur flag is so symbolic that there are people who take offense when they feel that it's being mistreated. As far as that particular shirt is concerned, I'm no fashionista, but I think it's just ugly.

ReplyDeleteI generally fly the flag. but didn't feel like it this time. I'm not proud of what is going on with the current administration, so I skipped my usual display. I am an arch-liberal and proud of it. People like me who were for Civil Rights (I was in the 1965 Selma-Montgomery March and my son is an African-American whom we adopted when he was a baby) and against war were often told to go back to Russia if we didn't like it here. For years I was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) who had all the right values. Now I am attending St. Andrew's Cathedral and St. Clement's Episcopal Church. I like the ritual and the weekly Communion. I was a Boy Scout. In the words of Bruce Springsteen, I was "born in the U. S. A." I live and let live, but don't mess with me. The current administration is messing with millions of Americans.
ReplyDeleteMy flag was acquired at Pearl Harbor where they sell flags that have flown over the USS Arizona Memorial. I told Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink about my flag and she told me to send it to her and she would have it flown over the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D. C. This flag has acquired a lot of spiritual "mana." But I didn't fly it today.
Wow! That's a truly awesome flag you have, Hank. It has a lot of interesting provenance for you to pass down to the next generation along with its mana, of course. Happy 4th!
DeleteKay...as your other home state of Illinois is on the verge of bankruptcy and we here in Hawaii also have incompetent City and State government (look at how much rail is costing us!), I agree that the state of affairs in this country is really screwed up. But the blame for the vitriol and hatred is on both parties...not only on the President. When the fake news networks only spew hate and false stories it is easy to say that the Prez should take it like a man. A Harvard poll done recently says 97% of the news coverage of the Trump administration is negative. You all may not like his methods but are we all to work till we drop dead and have the government take it all in taxes to take care of us from cradle to grave?!? Then there would be no incentive to work and strive hard to get ahead. We really would need those illegal immigrants to work cause they would be the only ones stupid enough to do so. So unless you were born into money, you would have a hard time saving up for a house, car, vacation...these would all be luxuries.
ReplyDeleteWhat do Illinois and Hawaii have in common...Democratic governments for decades. I'm not saying all Democrats are bad at governing. Governor Ariyoshi (D-first governor of Japanese ancestry) was very frugal but his successor Governor Waihee (D-first governor of Hawaiian ancestry) was a spendthrift and spent all the surplus that Governor Ariyoshi amassed. Governor Waihee expanded government...the number of employees and all the future benefits that they would get. He never saved for a rainy day and left his successor Governor Cayetano(D-first governor of Filipino ancestry) no money for the decade long 1990's recession. So then came Governor Linda Lingle (R-first female governor). Boy did the democrats hate her...treated her just like President Trump. She was never as colorful as President Trump because there was no Twitter yet but she was very frugal. She had to be because the piggy bank was very empty. She authorized spending on necessities not on niceties...needs not wants, holding to a realistic budget just like families must do every day. I cannot believe that you all think that the fraud, waste and abuse in government programs that goes on is okay. The news is full of articles...most times buried in the back sections...of how millions of dollars are wasted on things like the free Obama phones (includes free cell service plan). I once read that here in Hawaii with all the free government programs that one could qualify for, it equals to a little over $50,000 a year tax free. Who needs to work?!? Sometimes I wonder who is the smarter one, we who work or those who live off the government dole (which is really on those of us who pay taxes).
You may not like what I have just written but I just want you all to think about what it is that you want out of government because like freedom, it is not free.

DeleteThank you very much for voicing your opinion. However, I will take issue with you calling illegal immigrants "stupid". Like our grandparents who came here before us, they are striving for a better life. Many are desperate or from war torn countries. Although most of our ancestors in Hawaii came legally, they were not stupid either and they worked for very little and suffered greatly so the next generation would have a better life.
As for your opinion of the democratic governments in Hawaii and Illinois.... there was/is corruption and inefficiency. But that's again on both sides of the aisle. Republican governor George Ryan went to jail for federal corruption charges in Illinois. Granted the other three governors were Democrats.

I agree that there are lots of false facts out there and it's on both sides. I've seen some on Facebook and try to check them out when I have time and tell whoever posted it so they can make the correction.
As for President Trump, there I disagree with you. Yes, most of the news about him are negative, but that's because his actions are so very juvenile and mean spirited. There is news coverage proving that he lies constantly. If you are against the news media, I again totally disagree. We need news coverage to uphold our democracy.
It's true that I may not like what you've written, but I'm glad you did voice your thoughts because we have to keep ourselves open to hear what everyone is thinking.
