A few weeks ago, we bought some grapes at Sam's Club that were incredibly sweet AND really, really crispy. There was a snap when you bit into it. It was great!
It was so fabulous that we finished it quickly and went back for another carton.
We bought this one and discovered that although it was sweet, it wasn't as super crisp.
That's when we figured out that they are a different variety.
A couple of weeks later the Autumn Crisp appeared again. They're both from California farms. I sure hope the fires aren't affecting any of these farms.
It's scary to think of all the people and farms that are now in peril from those horrific fires. Especially since my son was once a firefighter, those brave men and women out on the front lines are in my thoughts.
However... meanwhile, these grapes were sure worth looking for.
POSTSCRIPT:
My friend, Diane told me yesterday that she'd just seen the Autumn Crisps at Sam's Club and saw there were LOTS of them available. A shipment must have just come in.
Art and I thought about it and on a whim went directly to Sam's Club and bought two of the large containers. There were at least three refrigerated sections full of the Autumn Crisps and more waiting on crates.
Today, Diane texted me that her husband had gone down to Sam's Club and the Autumn Crisp grapes were ALL GONE! Good gosh! I jokingly told her that everybody must have read my blog and run down to Sam's Club to buy it all up.
She texted back, "Maybe."

ReplyDeleteI’ll have to look for these grapes in case they come all the way down here. As for these terrible fires I always think about all the cherished antiques, art, photos, that these people will lose forever. Then all the little wild animals that can’t run or fly fast enough. It is such a tragedy. The fire fighters are so brave and work tirelessly.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen, or at least not noticed, those particular grapes, Autumn crisp. Funny that I am very picky about the variety of apple I buy and never really considered that obvious fact that grapes might come in different varieties as well.

ReplyDeleteDelano and Earlimart are far from the fires and our vineyards are fine here in the San Joaquin Valley. The grapes you are hearing about in the fire zones are wine grapes, grown on hillsides.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE crunchy grapes and I despise mushy ones! Same thing wiht an apple...I hate to waste food but I cannot even eat mushy fruit!!!!

ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Whole Foods has their Holiday Grapes for sale at $3.99/lb. Big, seedless, juicy reddish grapes that I learned to eat with gouda cheese, yum yum yum!
I have a wonderful recipe that uses fruit of all kinds and two kinds of grapes too. I make it for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. Bob, my husband, used to make it when he was living.
