Art and his buddies walk together a couple of mornings a week and stop at McDonalds for a senior drink (and perhaps a treat) and a fun chat before returning home.
One morning, they watched a couple of well dressed people (probably on their way to work) park their car, walk into McDonalds, grab a huge wad of napkins, fill their water bottle with iced tea, walk out and drive away without buying anything.
There's actually a sign posted there that states "For sanitary reasons we kindly ask that drink bottles and coolers not be filled here."
When you think about it, isn't this almost the same as shoplifting?

I hope stopping to use the rest room at McDonald's without buying anything doesn't fall into this category. Never have seen anyone help themselves to the drinks and depart. That is shoplifting.

ReplyDeleteYes, it is theft, right in plain sight. I guess they think that since they didn't sneak around doing it that it's all right. It isn't. :-(

ReplyDeleteThey do similar things in Toronto. We have even seen things like this at Panera Bread. They used to have a host at our McD's who used to berate the high school kids.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible they ordered online and paid online for what they have purchased? I am seeing this more and more in places like Starbucks. Younger people, busy people, want fewer interactions with humans.

ReplyDeleteNot sure if I agree on having Art and his buddies "call out" the thieves, but maybe let the manager know they've seen such activity. If the thieves are that crude, they may not be the type to confront, cause a fight, or Art and his buddies possibly being assaulted or shot. A sad world unfortunately. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteYes, Actually... My sister-in-law used to work for Walmart and they couldn't call out anyone until the shoplifters actually left the store without paying. I don't think Art or his buddies wanted to chase after those people. It is a scary world and getting scarier by the minute. We've had too many instances of it in Hawaii... sadly.

ReplyDeleteI just thought about my mom, who taught us, in our travels, that if we stopped at McDonalds, or any fast food establishment, simply to use the rest room, we should buy a cup of coffee on the way out.
