Before leaving for Chicago last month, I told my daughter, Tiffany that I heard they'd had a horrible cold spell and that I was thinking of bringing my warmer packable down jacket.
I'd bought this Lands' End jacket (it was on sale a couple of years ago) but hadn't found a time and place to use it.
I could almost hear Tif sigh... and maybe imagine her rolling her eyes.
It might be nearly 20 years ago that I bought a jacket (it must have been a really huge sale) because I liked the fur trim (I don't know if it's real) and the idea that it would definitely keep me warm. I vaguely remember my kids telling me I might be going overboard despite the fact that Chicago does have very, very cold winters.
I think I thought I could wear it to a Bears football game.
I think I thought I could use it to shovel our driveway.
I think I thought I could use it if I had playground duty.
I think I thought I could use it if we decided to go on a winter hike... at the North Pole.
Heck! I don't know what I thought. I only know I used it just once. I felt like an Inuit hunting a polar bear.
When we moved to Hawaii, I left that jacket in Tif's attic. We needed a large garbage bag to store it.
I told Tif, she could use it too. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

I guess that means no.
Looks like the jacket will have to be donated to a homeless shelter.
Oh... and about that silver Lands' End jacket...
Sigh...
I must remember to always buy a jacket with a hood. If it's that cold, I need a hood because it's a pain to carry a hat with me all the time.
I guess it's good I live in Hawaii now and don't have to worry about winter wear.

The first coat is a little like Sue's new coat, except hers goes down to her knees.

ReplyDeleteThe reason I cannot go anywhere that is really cold--I don't have the clothes for cold weather. Heck, this year my cold weather clothes weren't warm enough for the low temps we had. I'm anxiously awaiting warm weather as I have LOTS of clothes to wear then.

ReplyDeleteHey did your blood thin after moving here cuz in the low 70s I am freezing! I am wearing socks, heavy jackets and long pants. I would literally turn into a Popsicle in Chicago I think. My Wisconsin FB friend thinks I'm such a wimp. BTW at this age I don't care how I look, i.e. mismatched socks, cuz ain't no one looking at an old lady and we oldies are weird anyway :D BB
ReplyDeleteI thought my blood thinned out but during our February trip, I got used to the cold pretty darn quick. Thank goodness! I dress in layers which helps.

ReplyDeleteI am so glad I am in Hawaii. We shiver when the temps go in the 60ºs, which is very rare but gives us a chance to use boots.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of your silver coat. The one of Tiffany gave me a smile. I bought a warm coat for our trip to Alaska last year and am still wearing it in our winter, though I don't think it gets as cold here as a lot of places. It still feels good though and I won't be getting rid of it in a hurry, unless I move to Hawaii ;) Now that's a lovely thought but won't be happening unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteI guess we all have clothing based on our weather. Here we have two season cloths - wet and dry.
Yes, I get hoods even on my lightweight jacket in case it starts raining. The polar bear jacket is great. If it's so cold that you need to wear it, it needs to be a long coat down to your ankles. In Kansas, I watch the projected temperatures. Around 25 degrees or below, my long, down, hooded coat comes out. I have a 2 "car coat" length coats, just above my knees, with hoods, for the other cold times. My tulips and hyacinths are popping up. Spring is really coming sooner this year! Linda in Kansas

ReplyDeleteI no longer have my winter warm clothes from the ‘50s and 60s when I lived in Great Lakes State, boots and all. Most important then was being warm but don’t know what the fashions are now. Do have a couple newer hooded lined jackets I can get by with if not outdoors long but still have several pairs of leather and lined gloves from those days.
