People in Hawaii are working very hard to follow the strict stay-at-home policy. On the few times we've been out to get groceries, everyone wore masks and all the workers in the stores have been super kind and friendly.
Last week, an anonymous donor paid for 2000 surprised kupuna's (senior citizens) groceries at Foodlands in Hawaii. Wow!
When my neighbor found out that I was looking for Scott's shop towels to be used as mask filters, he stopped by our house with a huge package that he came across from Sam's Club and refused to let me pay for it.
I cut out shop towel filters to pass out to friends, neighbors and relatives along with the masks I made. Now I was just waiting and waiting for the elastic I ordered in March to show up by slow boat from China.
Other wonderful people have also shown us such generosity and kindness that we are filled with thankfulness. This is the general mood we've experienced here and are so grateful for.
Then I received a text this morning from my very good friend, Myra who shared a photo taken by her husband, Cal when he went for a walk in the morning.
Someone named Sarah in their community had placed masks with washing instructions right on their wall for anyone who needed them.
I know a lot of people have been donating masks to hospitals and other charities all around the island.
I guess that would explain part of the reason why the national COVID-19 maps no longer lists Hawaii. We've had several days of having no new cases. How long will that last? I don't know. There were news reports over the Memorial Day weekend of party goers who did their best to undo the progress we've made so far. And they weren't wearing masks!

It's nice to read of the GOOD people doing good things there, and you're one of them, Kay. :) It's too bad more of our country couldn't have been more like Hawaii, I was looking at the statistics for different states last night, and was surprised how well yours has done. We're doing our best here in Pennsylvania, we have a good governor at least!

Thankfully, our local cases are slowing. Toronto, not so much. Ottawa, where our tourists come from, has slowed a bit. Crazy.

ReplyDeleteThere seem to be two types of personalities. Those that think a little sacrifice is good for the soul and those that think everyone is out to get ahead of them.
ReplyDeleteThere are always a few bad apples, but like you, we've found most people both considerate and helpful. A friend just brought us a few extra paper towel rolls when they heard we were in need.

ReplyDeleteNo new cases is great. we cannot get it down consistently. I don’t think enough people are compliant. But like there, many many are being kind and helpful.

ReplyDeleteBet those partygoers were tourists, not Hawaiians. We really must keep our germs contained to our own area, not travel all over the world, spreading them, and taking the virus along for a ride. The corona virus is very lazy and counts on us to take it places.
ReplyDeleteThe cluster of infections here have been often the result of parties. One was tourists, the other was a local party at a McDonalds on the Big Island, I believe. The latest huge gathering was some servicemen, but I don’t know if there were any infections from that one.

We seem to be in the middle of the mask wars here. We wear ours when we do any kind of inside shopping, but today in both Safeway and Home Depot people invaded my space with no masks, acting as if nothing was going on. Apparently ignorance is bliss and freedom means you can do whatever you want.
ReplyDeleteSeriously??? That’s crazy! Don’t they realize Seattle was one of the first places where the infection started in the U.S.? Some people are so oblivious! Even though Hawaii’s infection numbers are quite low now (We did have 0 infections for several days) still, people are being very cautious everywhere we go. Thank goodness! Granted... yes... we do have those irresponsible people throwing parties, but on the whole, everyone is respectful.

ReplyDeleteNo new cases and fear has gone down. I used to get upset at people in line that stand right behind me, but now, not so much. Everyone is wearing masks. Everyone. So when I do go out, I enjoy looking at the different styles and patterns. Some are terrible fits and hanging on the edge of noses and some are gaping open at the top. A few make me laugh because of noses and mouths as designs. I think I have found the pattern I like best and will be making several soon for others to try. I'll send you the link!
ReplyDeletePeople have been very kind here and offered many times to do things for us. It's the thought that counts. we are able to do things ourselves and will be independent. Others may really need the help.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see people doing such nice things for one another. There is a little library next to a home (I'll have to take a picture of it) that has replaced books with dried and canned food, and masks! :-)
