I was happily busy in the month of March sewing face masks. I made over a 100 masks and gave them out to everybody I knew who needed them. All that activity kept me content and super focused.
I have cut out more masks, about 40 of them. However, I just can't seem to find the motivation to work on them. (And I'm not the only one. I've been texting all my mask making friends and relatives who tell me the same thing.)
I guess since most people in Hawaii have masks now, there's no immediacy of the moment to spur me on.
Ah well... Art says I'll have all year to work on them.
Shudder...

I actually wrote this post a couple weeks ago. I did finish half of the masks and gave most of them out. I thought everybody would already have more than they needed. However, now that people are going back to work, it seems more masks are needed since it’s often hard to keep washing your masks each night. So I’ve got a few more masks to work on after all. But after that...

ReplyDeleteI ran out of fabric before focus on masks, but I was keeping busy until the past week and all of a sudden I felt I hit that wall. Everything just seems to be too much. I am getting ready to head back north so that may be part of it for me.
ReplyDeleteI have not made a single mask, although I have some fabric. But without any elastic or comfortable ties, it was a waste. I now have order cloth masks from several venues...and very expensive and still waiting for those to arrive!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many wonderful masks these days. But I do think yours, and a couple of others I've seen, are especially well made. I now am the proud owner of five masks, all gifts or made by friends who live nearby. It's nice to have a selection! :-)
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm, is it reminding you of your repetitive work in the pineapple canning factory? It's ok to take a break from "Musings Mask Manufacturing." At least I have a UVG lightbulb to disinfect my masks, so I'm not spending washing time unless obviously soiled.
ReplyDeleteJust think of all those lives (the mask owners and everyone they come in contact with) whom you've kept healthy. Be sure and add your mask-making chapter to your photo books for your grandkids. It'll be interesting for them to explain this virus in the future.
I read something about gauze mask-making for everyone during the 1918 flu epidemic.
All of your mask-maker friends should contact the Shark Tanks! Homemade excellence with heart is better than mass-production by machines any day!

I know what you mean about mask making. I go go go and then stop stop stop. Actually I go stop go stop because I find a pattern that I like and then I keep on making variations to it, tweaking the pattern and asking people for feedback. But what happens is I don't get negative feedback (which is valuable) except from my daughter and then I tweak again. So now, I am my own critical "tester" and have over 30 prototypes and patterns, and no production. But, I think (and hope) that I have finally got it - an easy to sew and comfortable to wear mask. Meanwhile I have lots of elastic in different weights and sizes. Do you need elastic, my friend? Please email me, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI hope Art isn't right about the timeline but fear he is. Still, one can't have too many masks since we keep having to wash them. Nice to have choice. I saw a Gucci one the other day. Wondered when they would become fashion statements.

ReplyDeleteHowever, she is now doing knitting for premature babies which the local hospitals find very useful, especially very small sized knitted hats.

ReplyDeleteTime for a new hobby or short trip nearby. Caryn and I took our last spring play day shopping and out to lunch. Found a fun bird bath I'm going to enjoy watching the birds splash around in in our 100+ degree days. Caryn heads north where it's cooler to visit with family till Sept.
ReplyDeleteI made a new mask for myself yesterday using the elastic you sent me. It fits so much better than the second one I made and the narrow elastic is so much more comfortable than the first one I made. I will most likely make a few more. I need to check with family to see if they need more.
