Reusing Amazon Mailers

I've been mailing masks and other small things lately to friends and family on the mainland. Prices for mailing USPS flat rate boxes have gone up.

It's now $8.30 to mail the smallest flat rate box.

My masks are very light and don't take up much space so it occurred to me that I could reuse those Amazon bubble envelopes.

I've reused them before to protect my iPad in my traveling backpack.

And sure enough! It cost just $5 to mail 10 masks to Maryland for my grandson and his parents.

I've since asked my friends and family to save those Amazon mailers so I can reuse them if they were planning to throw them out.

However, now my brother is telling me he's been getting even small things from Amazon in cardboard boxes these days.

Ah well. I did save $3.30! Woohoo!

  1. At some point over the years of having little grandkids (that flew by too fast) the cost of mailing them little gifts just for fun got higher than the package contents. Of course, these days they appreciate a gift of money much more than trinkets!

  2. it's a new world situation these days with so many changes...so many ads on facebook for items made in china that take forever to arrive because of mailing issues

  4. I don't buy much online, but I do try to reuse those mailers when I receive them. But they're made of plastic, so it would be good if Amazon is moving towards cardboard that can be recycled.

  5. I do feel bad about putting those mailers in the trash, but I just don't have any other use for them that I can think of. I like that your mind is always working to reuse things.

  6. You are always so full of good ideas you need to write a "hack" book.

  7. I didn't know you could do that. I'll certainly keep my eyes out for them in the future.

  12. I've reused some, but even within the metro area, the postage for a non-typical envelope has increased. My post office tells me some items can't be sent First Class, that I have to mail them Priority. When did that happen?

    1. The prices of those flat rate boxes have really climbed, but I suspect, the USPS is having budgetary problems.

  13. They usually charge me about $3 for a package if I ship it. But I always use my own packages or boxes

  14. I still get most everything from Amazon in those blue and white bags. Perhaps it's because I dissed so many deliveries made in paper bags, in the rain.

  15. Sorry, just want to clarify. You re-used those extremely thin plastic mailers most on-line products are delivered in? & they are cheaper than the post office flat rate envelopes? I am excited by the possibility. Have put aside a lot of things to give away during the pandemic shut-down. Good stuff, but the postage would have been killer. I even want to send things to Switzerland. Thanks. Good thoughts to you!

    1. The Amazon plastic mailers are really quite durable. So far, they’ve worked very well for me.
