Repurposed Toothbrush

There is one cleaning job I've never enjoyed and often overlooked (on purpose perhaps). It's cleaning the sink drain. I don't know about the rest of the country but in Hawaii that drain with the rubber under my sink screen gets really, really yucky.

I would (sort of) often put on rubber gloves, get the bleach cleaner and a paper towel to wipe off the build up of slimy sludge. Darn! I wish I'd taken a photo of the sludge. You will have to use your imagination.

Anyway, one day I looked at the toothbrush I use to clean hard to reach crevices on my pots and pans and had an idea.

I got another old toothbrush and used it to clean out the drain. It did a great job on that black rubber collar (What is that for anyway?)  as well as the screw like channels on the other sink. (And why are there channels for screwing something in?)

Anyway, it worked like a dream! I didn't have to touch anything with my hands. I just cleaned the crevices with the toothbrush and stuck the toothbrush in the dishwasher.

How awesome is that?

  3. Is your one sink a disposal for scraps, Kay? That's what I thought those rubber collars were for--neither of my kithcen sink drains have one. But this is still a good reminder to hang onto my old toothbrushes!

    1. Yes, one sink has the disposal. The other is a smaller sink. We NEVER use the disposal. I guess we’re always afraid it’s just going to clog the pipes.

  4. Like Doug, mine doesn't have that collar. Still I find old toothbrushes a great tool for those hard to reach areas.

  6. Toothbrushes work on all kinds of things-like cleaning wedding rings, etc. I keep a bunch for hard to get places...

  7. Mine has that collar and yes, it does get filthy. In fact, I should probably clean it ASAP.

  9. You are the genius for getting stuff done. I like how creative you are. My sink drains all need regular maintenance because we are on well-water which means not treated water to keep the fungus and gunk at bay! I like the idea of washing the brush in the dishwasher!

  10. I haven't checked my drain for sludge. It does have a rubber splash guard for the garbage disposal. It just might be sludgy.

  11. The piece of the drain with threads also has threads on the outside, It attaches your drain to the drainage pipes.

    1. Thank you, Red! I would never have figured that out. I guess I should have asked our plumber friend.
