We could hardly wait to vote this year. I don't think we've ever felt the urgency to vote as we do this year.
I won't go into all the particulars of why except that we have a president who seems to think listening to experts is bad unless they're willing to agree with him and doesn't care that encouraging his supporters to not wear masks have caused the virus to make the U.S. have the most COVID infections and the most COVID deaths in the world. Then there's his reluctance to condemn white supremacist groups... and on and on and on....
So yes, when those ballots arrived we treated them like super precious documents.
The FIRST thing I did was to sign the outside envelope. There's been a lot of warnings about how your ballot won't be counted if that all important signature is not there on the mailing envelope and your ballot placed in the secrecy sleeve.
When I told her the ballots were ready for her, she jumped right up and dropped everything to sit at the table and vote.
She's been watching the Japanese news daily and is so disgusted with Trump that she couldn't wait to vote and be counted.
She says Trump has made our country a laughing stock and alienated our allies and is trying to be a dictator.
I told her, "I know. I know."
Fingers crossed that we can get some sanity back after November 3rd... or maybe middle of November.

Well said Kay, WELL SAID. And great seeing those pics of Art & your mom voting! Even without the pandemic I can't imagine our country dealing with Trump's corruption & lunacy another 4 years.
ReplyDeleteI have a fun cousin who texted me that she would be sitting with some shochu (Japanese alcoholic beverage) on November 3rd since we'll all be so tense.
DeleteKay that is a VERY good idea, I think I'll do the same!
DeleteMom would love some wine or sake too, I'm sure. Hmmm.... You're right. We'll all join my cousin.
DeleteGood luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christine! You're so lucky to have a sensible leader in Canada.
DeleteYay! I voted as well and delivered the ballot to the town clerk's office. So important, now more than ever.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure we'll all have our fingers crossed in November.
DeleteYay! Good Job!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Did you get to vote already?
DeleteFingers crossed, indeed.
ReplyDeleteWe need some sanity in our country. Otherwise, you might have a lot of Americans crossing the border to join you.
DeleteWe had only three candidates running for President. Don't know who the third one was. It felt so good to vote! We did it Friday when we got the ballots and returned them in person to our Town Clerk on Monday. They've been logged in as received - I checked on the website.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check in a couple of days and see if our votes were logged in too. You had only 3? Hmmm.... I wonder why.
Deletei voted too! we filled out the ballots as soon as we got them. are there many trump fans in hawaii? i can't for the life of me understand how anyone can vote for this idiot. let's all hope we can get him out of office!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe 30% of our electorate are Republicans. I know a great many of them are Trump supporters.
Delete>>She says Trump has made our country a laughing stock and alienated our allies and is trying to be a dictator. << Your mom is a smart woman. Wish we could convince more to think like she does. We got our ballots this week and I have opened my envelope and looked at the ballot. Studied a couple of the propositions and made my decisions. My plan is to get the ballot into a box this next week. We have drop boxes all over the county, one just down the street from us, where we can post our ballots.
ReplyDeleteSome of our propositions were difficult to make a decision on. We're supposed to vote for people on the Hawaiian Homes Commission. I had to leave that blank. I had no idea.
DeleteI certainly have to agree with your mom! None of our allies have any use for Trump...just the Russians.
ReplyDeleteAnd the North Koreans, I guess.
DeleteThat is a wonderful photo of your mom voting. It made me a bit teary. I so agree with your sentiments. The only other presidential candidate I've heard of is Jo Jorgensen. I can't wait to get my ballot and fill it out!
ReplyDeleteYay, Margaret!!! Yes, Mom was very determined.
DeleteI too was surprised at how many candidates were also running. We had 13 pairs and they had Joe stuck in the middle. I wondered how many were even real people. I just came from the court house where I turned in my ballot. The court house is closed here but they open a window 6 inches in the back to pass your ballot through to a clerk. Now we just all have to wait, hope and pray.
ReplyDeleteOur names were in alphabetical order. 13? Wow! That's amazing! It's nice that Biden was on top and Trump on the bottom.
Delete...and look at all the anger he has stirred up.
ReplyDeleteYes, we did the exact thing except, we drove the ballot up to the registrar's office!
Anger and racism for sure!
DeleteOur ballots will be mailed 20 days prior to the election, so we should get ours next week sometime. I can't wait, either! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to have it done! You'll be surprised at how good it will feel to cast your vote.
DeleteProud of your mom, she has a wonderful knowledge! Glad to see how she was excited to vote.
ReplyDeleteShe watches the news every morning. She knows exactly what's going on and tries to tell us. It's funny because we have to tell her we've already read it all on our cellphones before breakfast.
DeleteDear Kay and Friends, i can hardly wait until the election is over. Even if our current President becomes our next President, still it's only a matter of time before our country falls into socialism and general chaos. There's so many messed up people about who don't even know who they are.
ReplyDeleteRight wingers seem to throw out the word “socialism” as something to be deadly afraid of. I vaguely had an idea what it meant but had to look it up on Britannica to be sure. This is what it says. “ Socialism, social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. According to the socialist view, individuals do not live or work in isolation but live in cooperation with one another. Furthermore, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Society as a whole, therefore, should own or at least control property for the benefit of all its members.”
DeleteI know we’d NEVER get into that kind of pure socialism, but if we all cared for each other and wore masks to halt the spread of the virus and didn’t think about just yourselves, wouldn’t we be better off? If we all worked toward cleaning up the environment and stopping global warming together, wouldn’t we be better off? If we all had access to good medical care, wouldn’t we be better off? If we worked in cooperation with the rest of the world instead of just Russia or North Korea, wouldn’t we be better off? Just asking. I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that the future will be brighter for our children and grandchildren because we are in sad shape right now.
And I agree with you about “messed up people.” Just look at Michigan. That’s frightening!
DeleteLike DJan, here in Washington State we will receive our ballots next week. We are very experienced at vote by mail, but we will still treat this ballot with special care. The fate of our nation is riding on this vote. We must rid ourselves of the plague that is Donald Trump.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first year that everybody will vote by mail in Hawaii. We've always had the choice to do it by mail, however, and that's how we've done it for many, many years.
DeleteWe treated ours with ultra respect and urgency this year also. We took them to the drop-off at the election office and were so surprised to see a line out the door and across the parking lot of people waiting either to vote early in person or drop off their envelope! Never before have we seen this. Generally voter turnout here is pretty dismal.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed that they were voting for Biden.
DeleteProud to be your sister citizen!!! Go Mom!
ReplyDeleteHi Cloudia! Let's all keep our fingers crossed. Then there's the mayoral and representative race too... I'm sure Case will get in but wonder about the mayoral. We shall see... Have a safe and happy weekend, Cloudia.
DeleteThank you all.
ReplyDeleteLet's all hang together and just hope it will come out as we hope.
DeleteI'm cheering for your side.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Red! Canadians always seem to know more about what’s going on in the U.S. than Americans themselves.
DeleteGood for you! We're still waiting for our ballots.
ReplyDeleteWe can only hope that a LOT of Americans see the light.
Deletewe voted also. i hope with this system all of the votes will be counted!! enjoy your weekend!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbie! I'm so glad a lot of people are voting early to make sure their votes get counted.
DeleteI'm going to vote at early voting in my district. I just don't trust the mail in ballots. I know some people believe in them but I don't. Hope everything turns out!
ReplyDeleteI think early voting would be really helpful to get numbers counted in time. We've had mail-in voting available in Hawaii for a long time without a problem. I'm hoping it will be OK in the other states.
DeleteI won’t vote until Oct. 19. I will vote for Biden, also. I was raised by a father who respected women. I never heard him curse my Mom or call any of us belittling names. I despise this most about Trump. He has no respect for women unless they look like models. I don’t see how so many so called white Christians can still support. They must be brainless. Many are my friends. Makes me very sad.
ReplyDeleteAside from all his lies, I guess I’m even more upset about his racism and inability to condemn white supremacy.
DeleteAbsolutely. So how do some still swoon over him. I can see hoe Hitler came to power.
DeleteCongratulations Kay, we voted too. We treated our ballots like gold. Our TV watching has included the Japanese channel for over a year. It has such wonderful segments on there and we not only enjoy their news but also a lot of other interesting subjects.
ReplyDeleteOh what fun! You’re watching the Japanese channel? So does my brother. My mother watches it all in Japanese, of course which is great for her, but I think it’s reinforcing her Japanese too much so she’s forgetting her English. Ah well...
DeleteI'm with you-anxious to vote also and doing it by mail!
ReplyDeleteIt’s really the safest way in a pandemic.
DeleteHi, I just found your blog. I too voted early, and have been an absentee voter for years. So I was already used to voting by mail. I too am a Biden supporter.
