I had considered getting AirPods for a while. However, I was worried that with my weird ears, the wireless earbud would easily fall out of my right ear every time I leaned over. My daughter insisted that she loves hers as does my granddaughter and they should work fine for me too.
Soooo... I looked into it and what do you know. The AirPods Pro was on sale. It also stated that it had a noise cancelling feature.
So I bought it. I considered it an anniversary gift for myself although Art said to think of it as a gift from him. 🙄 He just threw in Mothers Day and added my birthday too.
I excitedly waited for it to arrive and it came sooner than expected.
Would you believe Apple gives you a new charging wire, BUT NOT the adapter for it? And on top of that, the pluggy thing does not fit any of my previous adapters. You have to buy a NEW adapter for about $20!
Arrrghhh!!!
Luckily, Art had gotten a new MagSafe (wireless) charger for Christmas that would work so I can charge my AirPods on that.
OK....
So now I was ready. However, what really moved me to get the AirPods Pro was the noise cancelling feature. I figured it would be great to drown out engine noise on an airplane (for whenever we can travel again).
I tested it out when Art was vacuuming the house just when I thought I'd take a nap.
I stuck them in my ears and it was great. Then I turned on the noise cancelling feature and could hear thumping... weird thump thrump bump. I wondered if the noise cancelling was broken on my left ear. So I tried moving my earlobe. Nope. Still thumping. Art said maybe it was my heart I was hearing. Nope.
I looked online and found other people had the same thing happening when they were walking or riding a bus. I was lying down!
Wait! Wait! I just tried it again while walking around the house and now I don't hear it.
What the heck! Maybe I have to stay upright to use the noise cancelling?
POSTSCRIPT 1: I was complaining to my daughter about that new charging wire. She told my techie son-in-law, Ed who owns an Android cellphone but is extra smart about anything technological. He hates Apple because they keep changing things just to force people to spend more.
Anyway, he asked what the other end of my charging wire looked like. I compared it to my old Apple lightning wires. They were the same. THEREFORE he said, I should be able to use my OLD charging wires. So I stuck that lightning side into my AirPod charging case and by golly, it fit and started charging.
Dang! (I never thought to look at the other end. Sheesh! I now have a useless NEW charging wire.)
So why didn't Apple provide us with a new USB-C adapter? Don't ask Ed. He'll just explain about profits and all that other stuff. Sigh...
POSTSCRIPT 2:
OK... Just to be extra clear about what everything is because I always need visuals to understand anything to do with technology.
Your son-in-law is not the only tech savvy person with a low opinion of Apple. I am the opposite of tech savvy but I know I will never buy another iphone. I do like my MacBook though.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy my airPods Pro very much. And I rely on the noise canceling so I can hear my podcasts through traffic noise. Weird about that thumping noise, I don't have that.
ReplyDeleteYeah I was talking to my screen telling you that the old charger and wire would work, just not as fast as the new system. I have bought a couple of the new chargers and cables along with the mag safe charger for around the house but generally just grab the old charger and cable when on the road since my vehicles all have the old USB charging ports in them.
ReplyDeleteHang onto your hat because Apple is talking about getting rid of the fire wire end altogether so that there is no physical port to plug your phone into. It will all be done magnetically. This frees up space for them in the phone and makes it more waterproof. But when that happens, they everyone will need to buy multiple mag chargers and at $40 a pop, that adds up quickly.
I decided not to go with the noise reduction air pods and just got the basic ones. I've been really happy with them. I guess I am rarely someplace where I can't listen to them comfortably and am still drowned out by outside noises. The main reason I went with the basic ones is that they fit my ears well and I don't have problems with them ever falling out. I was afraid with that extra cushion on the noise cancelling ones that they wouldn't fit as nicely. Now that you are saying they make a thrumming noise, I'm really glad I didn't get them.
I got Air pods for my birthday last year. But try as I might, I simply cannot get them to stay in my ears. If I move my head even a little bit, clunk, one of them falls to the floor. Hence, they're kind of useless for me.

ReplyDeleteOh, I understand all about Apple not including things and about a useless charging wire. Hang onto it, it will probably become handy. I have been told that APple is trying to reduce waste and landfill. I anm skeptical.

ReplyDeleteI am the opposite of your son-in-law regarding Apple. I love Apple products and buy them exclusively. What I love about them the most is the support the company provides with the stores, genius bar, tutorials, and technical support.
ReplyDeleteAlso the financial support. When my son (very techie) graduated from high school, I bought him some Apple stock because he loved Apple computers. At that time, only 5% of computers were Apple. He supported himself during college and took out student loans. After he graduated from college, he asked me about the Apple stock, which had split and grown. There was enough in his account to pay off his student loan! Of course I sold too early because it went on to split again and again and rise meteorically, but it was enough at the time.
I do love Apple. They have got me hooked.
I can't afford Apple so it makes me feel good that they are a bit greedy. Disappointing that you can't wear them for noise cancelling while lying down.
ReplyDeleteMy son-in-law is crazy about Apple and I do have an iPhone(7) but all Windows computers. I like a physical charger and old school headphones. I guess I'm old and resistant to change!

I do like my iPhone, and I still have music loaded on my old iPod nano which is currently hooked up to our sound system tuner. I still use wired ear buds with my phone when I use it for music when walking. My iPhone speaks directly to my hearing aids too, but the sound quality is poor. It's hard to keep up with technology. Some of us "old folks" do better than others. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am officially envious! I wear my old fashioned Sony earbuds to bed every night (that connect to my Samsung tablet that plays white noise). And every morning when I wake up, that wire has somehow wrapped itself 2-3 times around my neck! I need to look into these...
ReplyDeleteWe use the AVANTEK Noise Sound Machine for Sleeping, 20 Non-Looping High Fidelity Soothing Sounds with 30 Levels of Volume, 7 Timer Settings and Memory Function, Black for white noise when the neighbors have parties outside. It costs $37.99 on Amazon. If it's just for sleeping, this would be cheaper and you wouldn't have to worry about the Air Pods falling out of your ear.

ReplyDeleteApple isn't the only company to manipulate their products for profit motives. Planned obsolescence controls how long lots of products last before they wear out and have to be replaced. I changed to Apple computer when my HP wore out to be compatible with family members so they could more readily provide any help I might need.
