My very dear Illinois teacher buddy, Gerri proposed doing a ZOOM session the other day. I did get to see my colleagues when I squeezed in a trip to see my granddaughter dance almost a year ago. Our chat group of 5 teachers have been keeping each other company daily by text throughout 2020 as we held our breath before the November election. There's actually 9 of us but 2 are supporters of Trump and didn't want to be included in our texts, 1 doesn't own a smart phone and the other is busy with family. We respected the wishes of our Trump supporting friends, of course. Our friendship is more important than our political views.
Art and I have had ZOOM sessions with our children and grandchildren which we loved but had to work through difficulties with the angle of our iPad. I didn't like how the angle had them looking up our noses.
Sooo... I'm thinking. There must be some kind of iPad stand that would be good. Oh yes! You can find a ton of them, but they're not cheap and I'm thinking I wouldn't be using it after the pandemic is over.
And sooo... I'm thinking. I'll bet I could make an iPad stand.
I like to keep shoe boxes. I always figure I'll be able to use them for something.
Sure enough.
I took the lid and shortened one side of the lip and glued it down so it wouldn't cut off any of the ZOOM view. I used my sewing clips to hold the cardboard together. (Not a good idea because now the clips don't work very well. I should have used clothes pins.) 😖
And here it is!
Yes, it worked perfectly. It was wonderful seeing my teacher buddies again. It was just like a year had not passed but the hour and a half ZOOMED by in a flash. I'm ready for any future ZOOM calls now!
Kay, you are so clever and another problem solved! And I like the thought that the pandemic will eventually be over too.

ReplyDeleteFunny that looks a lot like the cover and stand we have had on our iPad. Mostly we use my laptop or Dan's big computer screen for Zoom. For FaceTime has to be my laptop because he doesn't have an Apple product. You are creative - one of the characteristics of good teachers.

ReplyDeleteVery nice solution! We still have a stand that we bought way back before Zoom was even a thing. I think we got it with the first generation iPad. They weren't nearly as expensive as they are now but they aren't as fancy either. Ours is simply rubber coated heavy gauge wire bent with two bolts to form a hinge. We actually had to dig it out of a storage tote downstairs and blow it off when Zooming became more mandatory.

ReplyDeleteI have a bunch of old (and no longer used) encyclopedia dictionaries, art books, etc. that come in handy for use as weights or as you say to add height. LOL

ReplyDeleteMy iPad has a really great stand on the cover I bought a few years back. And if necessary, I do use books to change the height so nobody is looking up my nose! Your homemade stand looks great, however. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe Ladies Who Lunch have become the Ladies Who Zoom. I send out the invite as Terry has a professional account which allows up to 100 people and unlimited time. I usually use my laptop, though, for the sessions, so as to have a big screen. We FaceTime with our grandkids on our iPhones and use a tripod when we do.

ReplyDeleteOver the summer I bought a metal stand for my iPad at IKEA. In addition to FaceTime calls, I use it every morning when I read the newspaper with my breakfast, so it's gotten a lot of use. For Zoom meetings I use my laptop.

ReplyDeleteSo very clever! I Zoom on my laptop in my sewing room. The problem isn't the angle of my laptop but it is the scene behind me. Too many fabrics and chaos. I might have to opt for a folding screen to hide the background - but for now it is just family that I zoom with, and a once a month zoom meeting with members of the Hawaii Stitchery and Fibre Arts Guild - all of whom love fabric.
