Yesterday was our 48th wedding anniversary. Art and I were married on January 6, 1973. We were figuring on a quiet day with some take out Korean food from Sadie's BBQ restaurant in the evening.
I wasn't expecting Democrats in Georgia to win the senate race. And yet, by the time we woke up Raphael Warnock had won over Republican Kelly Loeffler. Really? As the day progressed Democrat Jon Ossoff had also defeated David Perdue. We could hardly believe it. OK... That was a promising start to our anniversary celebration.
Our happy breakfast was interrupted by text messages about the chaos, riot and attack on the Capitol. Pro-Trumpers had broken into the House chambers. A woman was shot and killed. Interesting how the police were awfully careful not to hurt those violent white protesters. If there were minorities in the group, I wonder how they would have handled it. Then we got a ZOOM call from our children and grandchildren wishing us a happy anniversary. That was absolutely wonderful!
I then got a surprise email from Honolulu Aunty saying she had some Tyvek she wanted to give me and possibly a lemon chiffon pie (no, I didn't tell her it was our anniversary). She suggested meeting at City Mill because she was picking up some things there. Art and I wanted to share something with her too so we quickly made some pickled onions. That was fun to do because I'd been wanting to make some for ourselves too.
Oh gracious! Honolulu Aunty had the Tyvek material (future project: washing machine cover), a gorgeous pie and even some special elastic to make more masks. We were blown away. She is just the MOST thoughtful, generous, awesome friend to have.
Our take out Korean food was wonderful, but Honolulu Aunty's pie was even better. Uuuummm.... she even gave me some cream of tartar (which I gave as my excuse for not making a lemon chiffon pie) and would you believe... a lemon!
And you know what? After tasting this pie, I will definitely have to make it.
All in all, this was a historic anniversary day. Perhaps the chaos and insanity of today's happenings at the Capitol made some Republicans see the light. It has certainly tested our democracy and it was an embarrassment with the world's eyes upon us.
However, as a 48th wedding anniversary, it was AWESOME!
Sounds like a happy anniversary to me! Any day that includes lemon pie is happy. May you have many more anniversaries.

You are right about how they treated these rioters v. how they treated BLM protestors. We were in shock all night.

I'm sorry your special day was marred by Donald Trump, his crazed delusions reach far & wide; the important thing is, we have the Senate again and you have special people in your life like Honolulu Aunty. :^) Anyway, you guys all look great!
ReplyDeleteI guess I must have been watching it all on a different channel. I saw a video of a protester getting shot and killed, others tear gassed and many more getting beat with shields and nightsticks. It didn't seem like the police were going easy on the protestors nor do I think they should when somebody is overrunning a government building.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad this event had to happen on your anniversary. Hopefully it didn't mar it for future celebrations. I got married late in life and just passed 17 years. I dream of still being married in another 31 but the chances are probably not likely. Happy Anniversary!

DeleteI also heard a representative (while under lockdown at a safe area with other representatives during the riot yesterday) say that she was stuck with Republicans who refused to put on a mask while hunkering down. She felt it was going to be a super spreader event in Congress. Totally INSANE!

ReplyDeleteI don't feel comfortable giving out the recipe for the lemon chiffon pie because it was given to me by a friend who has since passed away and she never gave me permission to share it. Therefore, I'm hesitant to put it out into cyberspace. However, I can disclose the recipe for the pickled onions in tomorrow's post. That was given to me by my auntie and I know she got it from a Maui cookbook.

Your friend's recipe was so helpful - I searched online and in all my recipe books to find one that was like my mother's. What a nice surprise it was yesterday to receive delicious pickled onions and some homemade fruitcake from you - and to discover that it was your wedding anniversary! I didn't even know about the riot in DC since I don't watch the news. What a day to remember!

Happy anniversary! I also was thrilled to see the Georgia results, and then spent much of the day in front of the TB trying to understand what I was seeing. Now five people have died. :-(
