I was out working on some yard clean-up when Art came over to get my help moving a rock.
"A rock? What rock?" I asked.
"The landscaping rock," he replied. "Mom pushed over the rock."
When I walked over I was surprised to see the rock had indeed been pushed over. The previous owners of our house had put ornamental rocks here and there like in a Japanese garden.
(It wasn't until after we moved the rock back in place that I realized I should have taken a BEFORE and AFTER photo. I had to dig this out of our archives.)
It is a very HEAVY rock, a very, very heavy rock. It definitely took both of us to stand it up.
Then I had this idea to reposition it.
The reason it fell was that the rock was just placed there and not sunk into the ground; probably because it's so heavy that nobody thought someone could tip it over.
The bottom of rock surface that sits on the ground is also angled a bit.
So we turned it onto another side that was more level and sank it into the ground a bit to secure it. It took both of us and a LOT of huffing and puffing to move that rock. 😅 Why the heck is it so heavy anyway? I know it's not made of lead.

Eyebrows raised. Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteA mystery indeed. Looks good now.
ReplyDeleteDoes your mother sometimes secretly sneak into an old phone booth and put on a cape? I was asking myself through the whole post how she managed to tip it over.
ReplyDeleteSweet that Art can read your mind. ;)
You and Art certainly got your exercise in for the day!
ReplyDeleteWhen I google images of meteorites... I see a lot of space-rocks that look similar to yours! Hmm...
ReplyDeleteI imagine being Hawaii, your choice of rock are limited to lava or meteorite.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved rock. It just feels so permanent when you build or do something with it. But I live in an area where the only rock is 20 to 40 feet down below 19 to 39 feet of clay. Any rock garden I make would have to be from imported rocks.
My parents had a large rock in front of their house that could not be moved. The grandchildren loved to stand on it and we took photos of all of them on the rock. When my parents moved to assisted living, we all chipped off a bit of the rock to keep.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, your Mom has been taking her vitamins to have shoved that rock over. You two had better listen if she says anything for she can back it up:)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I'm glad that it's done and neither one of you tweaked your back in the process.
ReplyDeleteUh, are you sure some hired workers for other projects didn't accidentally tip the rock over? I'm thinking it was Menehunes more so than your Mom. Or, you kids could be in big trouble with Mom, if it needed to be in another position because of Ying and Yang, or Zen placement. Should you ask Mom if she moved it? Linda in Kansas, without big rocks.
ReplyDeleteShe says she just leaned on it as she was moving out of the bushes after trimming it. She had a tiny scratch where the rock hit her leg.
DeleteSafety issues. That's what it is. set it up so it doesn't fall on anybody.
ReplyDeleteI see you answer my question above about how she moved it. I'm impressed that you can sit on your haunches - that's quite a squat. I can't remember when I could do that.
ReplyDeleteThe rock gives character to the scene.
ReplyDeleteThis episode is emblematic of your wonderful marriage
ReplyDeleteMoving rocks at your age...lol!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering, too, how Mom pushed it over. She must have been leaning on it for support as she was getting up. It's probably easer it push over that to stand it back up. Now it will be no pushover. :-)
ReplyDeleteFunny - how did your mom move the rock? I love rocks. Some people are rock collectors and their rocks are quite extraordinary. I have a small one that kind of looks like Maui. I hope none of my kids dump it later.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks nice too, especially if mom is happy.
ReplyDeleteThat is a bit of a mystery. But it does look nice now, however she managed to move it!
ReplyDeleteCurious!
ReplyDeleteI think you've done a good job here.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
