The day of uncle's 101st Drive-By Birthday Celebration started out very ominously. The party was to be between 11:00-12:30.
After not being able to celebrate his 100th birthday last spring with the whole family, I hated to think this celebration would be postponed again.
"Can I say I told you so?" asked Art.
🙄
At 10:30 Rain started.
Then my brother, nephews and their families started arriving so I passed out the posters and we drove to the park in a caravan.
Since the cars were wet, we couldn't tape the posters to the vehicles and had to hold them up for uncle who was thrilled to see mom's Japanese printing. Uncle is a veteran of WWII having served his country as part of the MIS (Military Intelligence Corps) even while his father and eldest brother had been sent away to the mainland with other Japanese Americans and locked in Internment camps.
It was now time to celebrate his 101 years of trials, sadness, happiness, pride and now contentment in a life well lived in the loving embrace of the family who now honored him.
The happy day was also a time we enjoyed seeing so many relatives after a year apart.
And then the rain began.
It didn't matter. We all went home and had the lunches our cousins had given us.
And we took a nap. When we woke up, the sun was shining high in the clear, blue Hawaiian sky.

rain or shine i think the celebration was wonderful and your uncle was very happy!
ReplyDeleteWell done despite the imperfect weather.
ReplyDeleteWouldnt you know it..,then the sun comes out But it went well otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to see it all went well, even if a little soggy. Love the pictures, thanks Kay.
ReplyDeleteSo happy the weather didn't dampen the turnout nor your uncle's delight. What a chunk of history he has lived through. You all did a great job Kay.
ReplyDeleteWhat a good story that would be to hear of your family's history during the war. As someone who loves history, I have read other stories about that period of time in our country's history and would have bet it wouldn't have happened again but after seeing all the muslim hate after 9/11, I'm not so sure that it won't happen again.
ReplyDeleteYou were right about the weather report being wrong but sounds like the event was a success no matter the drizzle. is this your mother's brother?
ReplyDeleteUncle is mom’s sister’s husband.
DeleteWhat a beautiful event! Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteI love your writing, self-deprecating humour works for me. Lots of fun with your and your other half!
101 is an impressive age! Congratulations on the successful celebration.
ReplyDeleteRain can be a nuisance, but it also washes stuff down out of the air -- a little additional protection against the virus, perhaps.
Glad you could celebrate in decent weather! It's ironic when the sun comes out AFTER the event. Uncle sounds like he's led a fascinating life.
ReplyDeleteGood. You didn't let the rain spoil your parade. This was a special time of love and appreciation.
ReplyDeleteSo cute and nice! I am pushing my councilman for a city bill that honors centenarians by giving them free admission to anything city - i.e. zoo, aquarium, bus, rail (if it happens), parks and recreation classes, etc. If they are mobile and sharp enough to enjoy, then they deserve a free pass, imo. After all, it is a milestone.
ReplyDeleteThat's an excellent idea, Aunty! However, I think my uncle would have to hang on another 10 years and maybe a trillion dollars more to taxpayers to ride the rail. I was for it before, but this is ridiculous! Uh oh... I'm going off on a tangent. But yes, I'm all for free admission to the zoo, aquarium, etc.
DeleteIt will have to pass the city council 3 times once it is introduced. Not sure who your council person is - maybe Brandon Elefante? You can email him at belefante@honolulu.gov and mention the idea. If the bill is introduced, then it might ping in his consciousness that one of his constituents also brought it up....
DeletePower to centenarians! And hope for at least a partial rail from the airport to Kapolei.
I just wrote to him and told him your idea. Also told him I didn't like revising the tier to accommodate more COVID infections.
DeleteRain on top of a pandemic, yet the celebration went on! Even a rainbow. How wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this wonderful day with us! I know you will save mom's sign as a family heirloom. ❤️
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a wonderful time. And you even timed the heavy rain for later! Has anybody recorded all of the stories that Uncle has in his memory? And how did he meet your Aunt? In Hawaii, right? Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteWonderful. !01 years of life deserves a celebration -- rain or shine.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy the celebration was a success. See how many were cheering for it.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful a celebration, so happy for him and you. We're mostly Seattle raised and we go even if it rains. So far no one has melted.
ReplyDeletea special day to remember and honor your uncle!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful tribute.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful celebration :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
