We always buy a (small) case of Vienna sausages each year in case of a hurricane. We then donate them to the food drive once the threat is gone. We donated to the food drive several times this past year, but it was always monetary/online.
So now I was noticing that I had these cans of Vienna sausages which we normally don't eat.
I know they're not healthy and I know what I'm going to tell you is even worse. If you want to eat healthy, please stop reading and come back tomorrow.
I don't know where I learned to do this. I'm thinking mom must have made it this way when we were kids. She'll probably deny it. I think it's a Hawaii thing. Maybe it was my brother who showed me. He used to fry bacon in sugar. Totally, totally decadent. Don't do it!
Anyway, all you do is caramelize 1/4 cup brown sugar to 1/4 cup soy sauce. It doesn't have to be 1/4 cup. It's just 1 part brown sugar to 1 part soy sauce.I then dropped in the 3 small cans of Vienna sausages and simmered it again in the thick sauce.
Yes, it's bad for you, I'm sure.
But maybe once in a blue moon, it wouldn't cause too much damage? It's got to be better than sugar coated bacon, right?
I don't believe I have ever had Vienna sausages although I do recall seeing those little cans. I think I will most likely make it through this life without trying them.
ReplyDeleteIt has been so many years since I've had those little sausages. Don't plan to make these but is that all there is to making teriyaki sauce?
ReplyDeleteI have never had those sausages nor bacon cooked that way. The bacon interests me.
ReplyDeleteYou are what you eat. You should have just thrown these away. I was brought up in poverty and I must say that my mother never served this to me. Learn from your mistakes and do not buy in the first place.
ReplyDeleteHaha--Kay you're a dear, I had a good laugh reading this! Well, I know canned meats is a much bigger thing in Hawaii than "the mainland", there's tons of Spam love there! Anyway, I'm not a fan of Vienna sausages either but I suppose I wouldn't mind a couple Teriyaki piggies on toothpicks :^)~
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't sound much different than some cocktail wieners I had...and liked.
ReplyDeleteWe love Vienna sausages, too bad they are unhealthy. I fry mine up with a bit of oil and ketchup, your way sounds good, I should try that thanks.
ReplyDeleteVienna sausages, the staple for me in college. Haven't bought a can since.
ReplyDeleteWhen I make teriyaki sauce, I add some minced garlic and a paste made from cornstarch and mirin. It makes the teriyaki sauce thicken up much more and is so tasty. We make it with chicken quite often.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, canned meats were just the thing leftover in the grocery store right before a nasty winter storm was to arrive. Nobody ate them. Then I married into the Asian culture and was surprised to learn that they love those sorts of things. I don't often eat vienna sausages but I do get some spam from time to time.
When I make my actual teriyaki sauce, I use soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, grated garlic and ginger, and sesame seed oil. If I want to add a little Korean type tang to it, I add a red chili pepper. Perhaps I technically shouldn’t have titled this teriyaki sausages.
DeleteYum! My wife wouldn't let me add red chili pepper because she doesn't like spicy but I'm sure I would love it!
DeleteI remember seeing them at cocktail parties my Mother would go to ... I was dragged along and allowed to find a spot where I could read!!
ReplyDeleteI used to like Little smokies, which I think are a relative. That sauce doesn't sound decadent but it's not like you eat them/it every day!
ReplyDeleteI have a friend that loves those little sausages so much he would swim to Hawaii to sit at your table:)
ReplyDeleteI had a few at times growing up. Think I'd prefer sliced SPAM in that frying sauce. Maybe Vienna sausages (are they really part of Vienna's culture?,) are just dainty SPAM pieces. Bacon fried in brown sugar sounds tempting, but dangerous. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThat is fully loaded. we probably eat more high powered stuff than that.
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of Vienna sausages, I think we may call them frankfurters!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Oh, that's wonderful stuff. I do like vienna sausages too.
ReplyDeleteMmm yuumyy 🤩🤩
ReplyDeleteI've had sugar coated bacon. This is yummy!!! We're in a pandemic!
ReplyDeleteMy mother used to serve us vienna sausages for supper. Yum.
ReplyDeleteOh I could cook these in a heartbeat. They look so good!
ReplyDeleteI guess the important question is did you enjoy eating them?
ReplyDeleteSigh... OK... I confess I did.
DeleteYum! With some hot rice and ume and tsukemono - what a treat!
ReplyDeleteSeems you make sweet soy sauce. Many foods were served with sweet soy sauce including grilled meat, sausages, meat balls, or satay :)
ReplyDeleteThese Vienna sausages look yummy!
I'm sure if you are involved in a hurricane you'd be happy to eat anything...
