In June, 2013 we took mom on a trip through canyons, deserts and well... Las Vegas. We passed through Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon South and North Rim. Mom often looks through the photo album to enjoy the wonderful experiences she had.
Although the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is far more popular, mom loved the North Rim even more because there weren't as many tourists there. It was just more relaxing.
Having breakfast in the log cabin was such fun. This unique experience really amazed her.
Our daughter and family went to the Grand Canyon a while ago and had another unique experience with accommodations completely different from ours.
It was called Grand Canyon Geodome Glamping.
Apparently, my son-in-law wanted to see the night sky without Chicago's city lights to interfere with their view.
At first I wasn't sure it was a great idea with everything so exposed. I was glad to see they had curtains for privacy when they went to bed.
They'd chosen a larger geodome that came with a sofa bed for granddaughter, KC.
POSTSCRIPT:
I just want to reassure you all that my daughter said they weren’t really sitting on the edge of the canyon. That was just my son-in-law’s clever photographic angle.
We've several such glamping tents in Ontario! I love the photos!
ReplyDeleteI've never made it to the Grand Canyon. Great pictures and obviously a great trip, I would love to stay in the geodome. Those views of the sky are wonderful.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like both generations had a great experience there, but I got a little nervous at that one photo of your daughter and granddaughter sitting on that ledge! Also that geodome glamping is kind of pricey at 121 a night! But I guess traveling is expensive..🙄

ReplyDeleteI'm with your Mom on less crowded and those cabins looked cool. Your girls made me queasy sitting on the edge like that and as for the domes, I wouldn't mind one of those in my my back yard.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful experiences and photos! I like the idea of glamping, but I'm not sure I would like the reality. :) I've only flown over the GC and not visited it. It's an incredible sight from the air.
ReplyDeleteSuch neat experiences that will last a lifetime! Lovely night sky. I remember seeing that kind of sky when we camped out in the country or on Kauai - away from any lights. Just gorgeous. The geodome was invented by R. Buckminister Fuller. A very independent thinker.
ReplyDeleteWe spent a wonderful three weeks traveling in the southwest the September/October in 2005 after I retired. We saw so many national parks and national monuments. We stayed in a modern motel on the south side of the Grand Canyon and then drove around to the north rim for a day, since there were no lodgings available there. Everything was booked by senior bus tours.

You wouldn't catch me sitting on the edge though!
We went in '06 to the south rim but not to the main entrance. There is another that we read about, and we didn't see very many people. We stayed in Flagstaff which is not far away and also close to Sedona.

ReplyDeleteI've been to the south rim twice and I boated right down the middle but I've never made it to the north rim. Perhaps someday in my future!

ReplyDeleteThe photos were nice, and it's cute to hear your Mom's interpretation of the cabin. I love greenery so much, that the Grand Canyon isn't on my list. Even Waimea Canyon in Hawaii isn't on my list. I love the beach and forested peaks through the green parts of Hawaii. I DID notice the stars during one trip, driving in the dark from one town back to Lahaina. Yep, it was dark except for the stars. Linda in Kansas

The Grand Canyon has always been special to me from the time I was young -- many years before I ever had occasion to visit there several times. I envisioned the Canyon listening to an orchestral arrangement of Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" long before I visited there and still conjure the experience when I hear that music. We stayed in a cabin on the South Rim one year prior to a mule trip on the trail toward the bottom but had to stop half-way as a rain the night before had washed out part of the trail. I, too, liked the less congested North Rim. One trip we flew through the Canyon in a small plane -- awesome experience. Our family's last visit there occurred a few decades ago after my son's graduation at nearby Flagstaff's Northern Arizona University. This summer he and his family traveled from the Midwest to vacation at several parks including camping at the Grand Canyon.
I went to the Grand Canyon with a group of female friends years ago. We stayed two nights at a cabin on the canyon floor. It was May, and I remember how awfully HOT it was already. Those albums you create are priceless ways to revisit places.
