Mom IS getting forgetful, but at nearly 92, she's doing pretty darn good. She's forgetting names, things we told her the day before, foods we gave her a month ago (she thought she'd never had Costco hot dogs), and so on and so forth.
But she insists on cleaning the two downstairs bathrooms weekly, vacuum her family room and Swiffer clean the rest of the area, go on the treadmill once a day (used to do it twice a day), cook her own breakfast and lunch, maintain her small garden, clean the street of stray leaves (there's plenty), etc.
This morning, Art was passing by her family room and saw her doing this.
She wasn't able to go outside to do her yard cleaning work since it was raining and decided to exercise with her NHK Japanese TV show.
I wish I had her determination to exercise. Art is also very focused on exercising EVERY day. I'm trying to follow their example, but somehow I did not get that gene or mindset.
Is that why I'm finding my word retrieval capability diminishing? Sigh...
I know. I know. I did go for a walk this morning. Art forced encouraged me.

That's fun! We've our grandies here, and I don't exercise as I'm tired and running up and downstairs enough!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is amazing.
Walking is excellent, though. Don't beat yourself up. At our age we should do what we feel like!
It's true! Your mom is amazing! I am almost 86 and don't get near enough exercise.
ReplyDeleteYour mom is amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt's good that she does so.
ReplyDeleteYour Mom is doing great. I believe all of her activity routines keep her doing so well.
ReplyDeleteI noticed you mentioned your word retrieval capability diminishing. I have that sometimes. In fact I had it this week. I was trying to remember the names of a couple of people that I haven't seen in about 15 years. The more I tried to remember their names, the more frustrated I became. It was late evening and I was pretty tired. That night before I went to sleep, I tried once more to remember their names. I woke up after a good night's sleep and was up and about for awhile and suddenly, without any trigger that I know of, both of their names just popped into my head. I guess the little gears in my brain had to grind on that overnight and finally pulled up the information for me.
I love reading about your mom, she is amazing! That's a great picture too, love the outstretched arms! I think you're too hard on yourself, a daily walk is great too, I keep giving myself excuses to not working out, like "You did laundry today" or "You didn't have any breakfast yesterday".
ReplyDeleteFunny. I'm here at the computer to do my exercise walk with Leslie Sansone on YouTube. Like you there are times the word I want just won't come out of my mouth. One day is was humming bird another day sunscreen. What is going on in my brain? Off to walk a mile with Leslie. No more blog reading.
ReplyDeleteWell your mother is definitely reaping the benefits of her exercise habit. I enjoy exercising. But when I take a break, I get lazier and lazier.
ReplyDeleteI want to be like your Mom when I grow up. Oops, I am only 10 years behind her, I'd best get going. She is such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the motivation for exercise. I fight the mental battle every day.
ReplyDeleteI can exercise but I would trade that ability for your ability to make scrapbooks of all your travel. That's big exercise.
ReplyDeleteI walk in our pasture and woods most days, and I use the recumbent bike at least 4 days a week, 30 minute sessions; I read my current book as I pedal. I just can't make myself commit to any other forms of exercise.
ReplyDeleteWalking is actually my favorite exercise!
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiration she is and thank you for sharing her life with us.
ReplyDeleteWhile I mean to exercise, I seldom do.
ReplyDeleteoh if we only used all the energy we waste on worrying for other positive activities...lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm never going to get even a little strength back if I don't exercise, But I never seem to get them all done.
ReplyDeleteMove it or lose it is my mantra. I have a set of exercises I do everyday for a variety of reasons--spinal stenosis, sciatica, upper body strength. The stenosis and sciatica ones are done on the floor and the cats like to join me. Some of the movements are very yoga-like, according to my daughter, the yogi, but I don't try to do yoga but have a friend who swears by it. The upper body exercises are done, standing, with two 5 pound weights. This exercise has made a world of difference in my ability to lift and carry.
ReplyDeleteI do miss my walks and runs but will get back to them when I don't have family staying with me. Your mom is incredible! She is very determined to stay active.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should be like Mom and art, and like you a little bit too my friend!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy exercise and find it does help my mood most of all. I think your mom is amazing. I keep forgetting things I did a week ago, too. And she's got a year or two on me.
ReplyDeleteExercise is important, your Mom does brilliantly.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Exercise is important and does make me feel better too, but don't beat yourself up over it. That won't help you feel better or remember more.
ReplyDeleteMemory issues are disturbing. I am constantly forgetting the names of people and plants now, but they come to me eventually, usually well after I needed them in a conversation I was having. My general vocabulary suffers too.
I am faithful about my physical therapy routine three times a week. It takes about an hour and ten minutes, and I have a checklist to keep my honest. It has been too hot to walk most of the summer and I am not an early riser. Yard work the last four days has been more than enough exercise. I'll have to get on my stationary bike during this next heat wave. It's in the garage, out of the sun, and cool enough in the mornings.
Kay, you are healthy and slim and you eat right. Be kind to yourself about exercise.
One has to get in a routine to keep on exercising.
ReplyDeleteYou have to keep up with Art and your Mom -- that counts as exercise doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteMom is a wonder.
