Art saw mom bringing in an aloe leaf one morning which is a clue that she's gotten injured. I've told her that it's been advised aloe is helpful for sunburns, but not cuts. However, she still insists on using aloe for anything anyway.
Well.... Art asked her where she injured herself and she stuck out her finger. He called me over and I was surprised to see a lot of pus that had formed.
This was not a recent wound or splinter.
I'm thinking flesh eating bacteria which seems to be in the news quite often in Hawaii.
This happened on the day she usually goes to her day care which she really enjoys.
I told her we'd have to skip the day care and perhaps go to urgent care or ER.
She was so upset about missing her day with friends that Art felt we (me) could try opening up the pus sack and irrigating it.
I got one of my glucose monitor lancets and broke the sac open to find the splinter. I know it hurt... a lot... but she refused to flinch for fear I would stop.
I squeezed out the pus, put some hydrogen peroxide on it and she happily got to go and see her friends.
Incredibly...
Within a few days, it had healed with no ill effects. So amazing!

I don't think Aloe Vera is harmful to cuts. Anyway, well done about squeezing out the pus!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is so brave!
ReplyDeleteI think you did very well taking care of your mom's finger. I would have added some Neosporin antibiotic cream, but otherwise done the same.
ReplyDeleteThat was certainly a winning solution — not miserable trip, a good outing for mom, and a quick healing.
ReplyDeleteLin says wow you should handle out your shingle as a doctor and take in customers...lol!
ReplyDeleteGreat doctoring of something if left untreated could have gotten worse.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this title in my feed, I thought "Surely Kay is referring to the current state of affairs or something..." nope! You're talking about an infected pus-filled finger! Well, strangely this did not gross me out and I admire all 3 of you--you & Art's success in treating it, and your mom for putting on a brave face. :^)
ReplyDeleteWell done all three of you. Art for finding it, you for attacking it and your Mom for being brave. And she still got to got to day care. Huge win.
ReplyDeleteVery amazing!
ReplyDeleteDoctor Kay to the rescue!
ReplyDeleteNow I think I will go watch Dr. Pimple Popper on tv.
ReplyDeleteGood work!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that worked so well and so fast. That puss filled wound surrounded by redness and swelling could have been dangerous. You caught it in time.
ReplyDeleteAnother successful treatment by Dr Kay!
ReplyDeleteWell done, all around.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Nurse Kay. Better to have taken care of it at home than for the sac to burst around friends. SO glad she's enjoying the daytime care. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI could have used your help with this one. I'm very squeamish about causing pain. I've scheduled a post to go up later about another accident mom had that scared us silly. I hope the photo that will go up doesn't gross anybody out.
DeleteIt sure did heal fast after having the pus removed by Dr Kay! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell done Nurse Kay, pleased it healed quickly.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Ouch!
ReplyDeleteKay I fished your comment out of my spam folder fyi I always check now. Thanks for the teriyaki sauce tips.
ReplyDeleteOh dang. Little cuts, splinters and wounds seem to get infected easier than the bigger ones.
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that your mom enjoys her daycare so much. And the mental picture of her walking in with aloe Vera ...too funny. She's a practical sort, isn't she? Much like her daughter.
ReplyDeleteGrateful to know that Mom is okay. You guys take wonderful care of each other
